1A tough start to the round, so hopefully you’ve warmed up on the range beforehand! Several bunkers are to be avoided from the tee and considering thishole usually plays into the wind, quite a narrow green awaits. If you can manage an opening par 4, give yourself a pat on the back before proceeding to the 2nd.2A generous fairway awaits, however the difficulty of this hole is really in the undulating green. The pin location of the day means the hole can vary from a good birdie opportunity, to leaving you relieved to emerge with a par.3Stroke Index 1 and a formidable challenge, even in benign conditions. You’ll find a dog leg from left to right with perfectly placed bunkers on either side of the fairway to catch an errant tee shot. From here you have more bunkers to contend with, irrespective of whether you decide to lay up or brave the green in two shots.4Copses of trees will catch a sliced tee shot here, however there is more room than first appears when standing on the tee.The green is perched below the fairway at the bottom of the hill and the challenge of this charming par 4 is often in club selection to the green.5After the difficult opening, the 5th is seen as a welcome respite by many.Longer hitters are often tempted to try and get near the green with a big tee shot, however accuracy rather than power is usually the order of the day here.6The first of Bristol & Clifton’s tremendous par 3 holes is often played in a cross-wind, with the green providing a narrow targetFor those fortunate enough to find the green, the challenge does not end there as this is another undulating putting surface.7As you emerge from the trees on to the 7th tee, you’ll find this stunning little par 3 in front of youYou should endeavour to keep the ball below the cup with the tee-shot and if you can manage it, an uphill putt will offer a good opportunity for a birdie.8After the test of accuracy on the previous few holes, the 8th requires you to open your shoulders once more, as this is a long par 4 where the tee shot is uphill. You should favour the left side of the fairway to ensure you are not blocked out by the encroaching trees which run all the way down the right side of the hole. The green, whilst being comparatively flat, is long from front to back so be sure to take enough club with the second shot.9A lovely end to the front 9, this par 5 dog-leg’s to the left back to the club house. The drive through the avenue of trees should avoid the huge bunkers on the right of the fairway.Longer hitters can go for the green in two, however the shrewd tactician will decide to lay up and avoid the many bunkers which await.10The back nine starts with this short par 4,that will play as difficult as you make it! Take a 3 wood or a long iron from the tee to avoid the bunkers and this will leave you a downhill approach to the green which is heavily11This tee-shot can be quite daunting with out of bounds on the right hand side and a slope which also pushes the ball in this directionThe green is raised and slopes away on all sides, making any recovery shot a formidable challenge.12A long par 4, but one where there is plenty of room from the tee. Both tee shot and second shot need to favour the left hand side to counter the slope. On the green, the nearby 16th hole provides a lovely backdrop as you putt out, for what will h13A stunning drop hole par 3 and certainly one you will remember.Club selection is everything here, however if you can get this right and allow the ball to feed down from the left on to the green, it will be doubly memorable.14This hole climbs gently to the green at the top of the hill. Room for manoeuvre is available from the tee;however a hook will leave you with a stone wall to contend with! Trust the yardage with the second shot and hopefully you’ll have a pleasant surprise when you reach the brow of t15Another stunning hole and further example of the variety of challenges here at Bristol & Clifton. An eagle 2 is possible, but so is a card wrecking 6 or 7, if you get your strategy wrong. If you attempt to drive the green, you must get it absolutely right, or you’ll wish youâ16Much can happen at this hole, which falls at a crucial point in your round.Out of bounds on the right, a fairway that slopes heavily to the left, an old quarry to negotiate and if you find yourself above the cup, one of the quickest putts on the course!17The last of the par 3’s and one that complements the others so well.A plateau green awaits and challenges even the best of tee shots. Be very pleased with a par here.18As many of the best courses do, we end with a par 5 and this is a great place to decide a match.A fade is required from the tee, where unusually for a par 5, accuracy is more important than distance. A low, running second shot will make good progress and hopefully reach the g
