1WOODHEAD The opening hole of any course is normally a gentle affair to ease you into the round but here at Loudoun you are challenged from the start.A tree lined fairway requires a solid drive favouring the right half of the fairway as this offers the best angle for the blind second shot to a difficult sloping green, take par a2CUCKOO''''''''''''''''S REST When you arrive on the second tee it may not be O-Bvious what you need to do asthe fairway is partially hidden dog legging left to right and the tee-shot drops by around 35 feet. The 2nd may be a short par 4 and a scoring opportunity but the drive really need3ELBOW As the name suggests we have another dog leg and again left to right.Another scoring chance if the second shot is played from the fairway but there is lots of trouble awaiting.A burn runs the length of the hole and surrounds the green, trees also left and right and a fairway bunker recently added means the hole requires your full attention4BIG WOOD This hole was added to the course around the mid 1990’s and added a new dimension to the start at Loudoun. This is a cracking Par 3 with a newly updated green offering some additional hole locations and the wind plays a large part in what club you need to hit on this hole. The right sid5CASTLE Another of the newer additions to the course that offers the one and only par 5,you may look at the length and think it is a chance to make birdie but this is another trouble filled hole to accept par on. From the tee you need to drive through a chute of treesthe rises steeply and does not offer a good opportunity to hit the difficult green in two. The green itself has undergone some changes with bunkers left and right and not too far b7LIMES Toughest hole on the golf course long, tree lined with aslight dogleg left and what looks like a very small green surrounded by bunkers. Not only position of the tee but you need to hit one of the best due to the length of the hole the 8HOWF The 8th hole is a decent chance to repair any damage done during the recent tougher holes,a straightaway drive will offer you the chance to hit a mid-iron into the green. The surface has some subtle borrows so if you find the green take your time over the putt and make 9WARREN This hole used to sport an “internal” out of bounds but the ditch was filled in and no longer protects the hole, however over the years a forest has grown up the right oThe fairway has a large dip and a slight turn to the right you find a very well bunkered hole with the recently upgraded green. The green is now larger and slopes from back to front offering many more pin positions for the green staff to tempt the golfer with. Not a long hole but this could finish off your 10AVENUE The first of 4 par 3’s on the back 9 making this a shorter but questionably tougher half on which to score. At over 215 yards from the medal tee the hole is straight away with bunkers left and right. Get on the green with your tee-shot and take par and you have picked up at least half a 11BURN Another par 3 this time length not really the prO-Blem as unless the wind requires it a mid-iron should again be suitable to hit the green but beware. The burn, as in the title runs the length of the hole and skirts the right side of the green with a bunker to the left offering no simple bail out. Ideally you need to hit one more12MARSH The burn continues from the 11th and bisects the12th hole offering two small fairways to aim for.The play over the burn offers the better second shot back across to a green surrounded by the offending burn! A precise tee-shot and second can again offer a good scoring chance as13WESTWARD-HO We are now at the business end of the golf course and if things have gone well so far you need to re-group as you are now going to be tested all the way home. Stroke 2 Two fairway bunkers narrow the fairway for the longer hitters but playing from short of the bunkers will still need a long club to get the distance required to get tothe green which is again well guarded by bunkers left and right.14LANG LUIK Longer than Stroke 1 this hole has more challenges as well, fairway bunkers, trees left and right, thick rough and do not mention the A71 road to Edinburgh and out of bounds a few feet to the right of the tee!The drive is all important here and you will again require two well struck shots to get this green for a well deserved par.15ROAD The shortest par 4 on the final 6 holes but again you need to wary of the road on the right and many well positioned trees up the left of the hole. The rough on the right of a left to right sloping fairway is also very thick and best avoided.I would suggest use a club that finds the fairway and offers you the chance to go for the green from the cut and prepared! The entrance to the green is so narrow that the shot need16HAG Make par and smile walking to 17th tee! This tough par three often plays into the wind and can even require a driver to get there. The remodelled green has now two larger bunkers protecting the surface left and right, you will make par more often from short of the green than from either of these bunkers. There17PLATEAU According to the Stroke Index this is the easiest hole on the golf course! Nearly160 yards uphill and again sand is awaiting a slightly errant shot, again an extra club is recommended as anything coming up short can end up 40 yards back down the fairway leaving18THORN The longest par 4 on the course takes you home. A long straight drive is the order of the day but again anything left or right will be in long rough with some tree issues to If you can get it onto the fairway you still have a long second shot up and over the rising fairway then downto a large green bunkered left and right. Making a 4 here will always bring you into the clubhouse feeling satisfied as you need to play well to make this par.
