1The fairway provides ample room to recover from first tee jitters as you tee off at the birthplace of golf. Avoid the Swilliken burn that crosses the fairway in front of the greenMany holes in Scotland will allow you to safely land short and bounce onto the green. This is NOT one of them. Far better to be long than short. Lag that first putt inside the three foot circle. Par is a great score on the opening hole.2This hole provides a preview of things to come with bunkers right and left to avoid at 452 yards in length. A steep slope short and right of the green guards it from any errant approaches as do two green side bunders on the right.This is the first of 7 double greens on Saint Andrews Old Course, sharing this green with hole 16. 3Play your tee shot just slightly to the left of the three bunkers on the right, but dont play the left side of the fairway as it leaves a perilous approach to the green.Cartgate bunker must be avoided at all costs. Better to play short and play for a one putt par than take it on if you're out of position off the tee.This is the second of the double greens sharing it with the 15th.4A well placed drive in right center of the fairway provides the optimal angle to approach the green. A deep bunker guards the left side of this green which should be avoided at all costs. 5This par 5 is one of the best opportunities for birdie on Saint Andrews Old Course. The seven sisters bunkers on the right only pose a risk to poorly hit drives. Longer hitters cThere is a swail before the green but there are no hazards in front of the green so players can bounce approach shots into the green. This green is 100 yards deep so pay close att6Your decision to hire a caddy for the round will be rewarded as you face the blind tee shot here, otherwise having no idea where to aim with eleven bunkers- 5 coffin bunkers on theGorse over the back of this green will make players regret no tplaying their approach shot more conservatively. The sixth green in the third of the double greens here at Saint Andrews sharing the green with the twelfth. 7Play your drive just to the left of the flag on the 11th green. A large hidden Shell bunker awaits long hitters drives at around 300 yards from the back tees. 8A deep bunker guards the front of this green so be sure to play enough club, however be aware that the prevailing wind is also from your back. 9Two bunkers in the center of the fairway must be avoided on this short par 4. From the back tee a drive slightly more than 300 is required to carry both. If you have successfully navigated round the bunkers with your drive, this hole10Most players will want to play short of the nexk of this fairway sitting approximately 280 yards from the tips, leaving around a hundred yards to this green.11Deep Greenside Bunkers Short and Left must be avoided at all costs on this tee shot. Nicknamed cardwrecker by many locals, you'll see why if you find either. 12Carrying the first fairway bunker and staying short of the second set of bunkers at around 250 yards from the tips leaves an easy wedge to the green and a great chance for birdie.13This hole has the 3 famous Coffin Bunkers down the left hand side and is one of the most difficult holes on the golf course. Hope you practiced your lag putts. Play for inside the 3 foot circl14This is one of the longest holes in major Championship golf and the longest hole in Open Championship History. The hole has out of bounds all the way down the right and the BeardieYour approach shot needs to clear the infamous Hell Bunker. The front of the green has a rampart, similar to others on the course15While this par 4 is straight enoughforward, the narrow fairway demands your full attention and respect. The green slopes from front to back so land short of the pin on your approach to avoid going long16Avoid the Principals Nose bunkers in the middle of this fairway and the out of bounds extending all the way down the right hand side.The green features a rampart or bank at the front but also got a ridge at the back so precise distance control on your approach is required. 17Got to BELIEVE! Drive over the Old Course Hotel to a fairway which cannot be seen and dog-legs sharp to the right. Choosing to not drive over the hotel and going to the left can lThe green is only around 13 yards wide with the pot-hole (road Hole Bunker) at the front making it extremely difficult to hit18The 18th has an extremely wide fairway with out of bounds down the right hand side. The line for the tee shot is the clock on the R & A Clubhouse. Dont forget to stop for your photThe fairway is relatively flat until you come to the Valley of Sin which sits in front of the green. Then you have to decide whether to pitch over it or run through it. Congratulations! You have just walked in the footsteps of the founders of our great game!
