1The Donald Ross Course at French Lick opens with a straightaway par 4.The perfect tee shot on this hole is one placed in the left center of the fairway.The downhill sloping fairway will most likely produce uneven lies. The approach is slightly uphill to a green protected by two large bunkers. Beware of the right side, deep face bu2The tee shot on hole 2 is an intimidating one.A drive over the right fairway bunker to the left-center of the fairway is the prime target.This will give you a level lie for your second shot. The area surrounding the green slopes down toward the bunker in front, so be sure to take plenty of club on your approach.3Hole 3 at the Donald Ross course begins with a blind tee shot.A drive of 250 yards from the back tee is required to clear the crest of the hill. From there, the approach is downhill into a green that is protected heavily on the right side. Th4The par 3 4th hole is as penal as it is beautiful. Any tee shot left short will end up in the collection area before the green, resulting in a difficult uphill chip to a green that5The 5th hole is the longest par 4 on the course. An accurate tee shot is required, as both left and right shots fall off the long ridge on which this hole is played.The green is relatively flat, but well protected by bunkers on the left and right which will collect any errant approach shots.6The longest par 3 on the front 9 requires 100% carry from the tee to the green into a prevailing Southwind.A shot short of the green has no chance to bounce up onto the green. The green has two distinct tiers. Finding the correct tier off the tee is key to ensuring a par.7The seventh hole is the first of two par fives on the Donald Ross course. A tee shot aimed at the right edge of the first fairway bunker is premium.Out of bounds lines the entire left side of the hole, so staying out to the right on the second shot is the safe play.The green is protected by a bunker in the front and back, placing a premium on distance control during the approach.8The 8th at the Donald Ross Course is one of the most talked about holes in Indiana golf. Hole 8 is a perfect 90 degree dogleg. The ideal tee shot is to the right edge of the fairwaThe green slopes 9 and a half feet from back to front. Stay short of the pin on the approach or face many putts.9Our own “Road Hole” plays much easier from the center of the fairway about 220 yards from the tee.The second part of the fairway slopes from right to left, and is heavily guarded by bunkers.Therefore, a well struck, accurate approach shot is required. The approach is uphill and will most likely demand at least one extra club.10The back nine begins with a short par 4. The ideal tee shot is placed in the right center of the fairway, to allow for a more favorable angle into the green.The approach is slightly uphill into a concave green which slopes from back to front.Take plenty of club on your second shot, or you might end up being rejected by this false front.11The 11th is a beautiful par 4 that increases in elevation from tee to green. The tee shot must carry over a pond and avoid two bunkers by the landing area.The key to scoring well here is calculating the correct distance on the approach. Most days it will require at least one extra club to carry all the way up the hill.The green is also guarded by two bunkers.12Your second will most likely play from an uneven lie, so keep that in mind and avoid the tall fescue that awaits on the left side of the hole.The 12th fairway slopes heavily from right to left. Aim for the right side where the fairway meets the rough and your ball will roll to the center of the fairwayThe green slopes slightly from left to right.13The 13th at the Donald Ross Course is a long, demanding par 3. A deep faced bunker in front will collect any tee shots hit too short.but even then you will have to contend with mounding in the rough.If there was a good miss here, it would be short left of the green,14The tee shot on 14 is blind, but any tee shot of 200 yards or more placed in the center of the fairway will crest the hill, and reveal a magnificent view.Fescue and water loom behind the green, so dialing in the right distance for your downhill approach is very important.The approach is an open shot at the largest green on the course.15The 15th is the longest hole you’ll play at the Donald Ross Course, measuring 665 yards from the back tee. The ideal tee shot is up the left edge of the fairway.The fairway slopes from left to right, so your follow-up shots should also play to the left side of the fairway, which of course is guarded by numerous bunkers.The green is one of the flattest on the course. Par is a great score on this long par 5, which is the number two handicap hole.16The par 3 16th is the shortest on the course. The postage stamp green is surrounded by bunkers on all sides. The fairway slopes from right to left.Two terraces split the green, which is perched atop a hill. Approach shots that find the same terrace as the pin are a definite plus.18The tee shot must be down the middle as sand and trees await at both sides.The approach shot is uphill to a large, shared green complex. Approaches hit too long or short will roll off the green, so distance control is a premium.The finishing hole is a testy par 4. It’s a far carry to the top of the first hill, and equally as far from there to the green.
