1The long finishing hole for the Red course makes a difficult start for the Black it's better to think of it as a short par-5, where two solid shots will give you a chance for an upIt looks like there is all the room in the world for the second shot, but there is a hidden hollow on the left which is by far the toughest recovery around this green.2It's never easy to play an exacting iron shot so early in the round. The small bunker that crowds the left front of the green will cause many to miss right, down the slope. Staying left is the better option.3One of the strongest par-4's on The Loop.Play over the hump in the fairway off the tee, to give yourself a bit more fairway in front ofthe green as it sticks out onto the end of a ridge. Short and long approaches are both rejected; only the short left ball leaves an easy chip, and even that one is running away fro4My favorite hole of all 36, this short par-4 is wide open off the tee, but onlya good drive up the left half will give you an open look at the green, hidden in a dell just over the crest of the fairway. If you've driven right, beware the pot bunker at the right front of the green, but also keep in mind that the green runs away from you.5One of the toughest par-3's on either course, this one-shotter plays slightly uphill to atwo-tiered green, angling away to the left. Anything to the left will collect down into a deep bowl; the only good place to miss it is just in front, below the hole.6The tee here is straight behind #5green, and this is a long hole down the left... the red flag to the right is #11 coming home. The 6th green is very shallow as played from this angle, and with a big false front on7As with #12 Red, this par-4 is so short that many players will be tempted to pull driver and go for it, but the approach is difficult if you're not coming into the green from straiAbove all, note the small, nasty bunker in the middle of the fairway. and be sure to either carry it or lay up short.8The tee for the shortest par-3 on the Black course is back to the left of #7green, and the hole plays to a green half hidden by a flared-up bunker at the right front. Hole locations by the bunker are intimidating, until you remember that there's nothing bu9This green at the far end of the links is the only one where your approach on either course comes from the same direction but here, it is at the end of a long par- 4.Though the bunkers along the right of the green are an O-Bvious place to avoid, the fallaway along the back left flank is no better place to miss, especially as the green tilts fro10This long par-5 is pretty straight- forward until you come to the approach, where a Scottish-style ridge has the potential to steer a low approach into the left side of the green, but at the next moment might send a high, short shot bounding away from the 11A solid tee shot with a hint of fade is ideal, as you want to have a short club in your hands for this approach shot, which has to be played over a deep hollow. A large pine tree tcombining with a small pot bunker to form a narrow entrance to the right side of the green.12The best short par-4 on the property tempts you to thread a long tee shot between two bunkers, but you'll have to play high up the left side so your ball doesn't funnel down the slbut if you leak the tee shot too far to the right, a small tree may interfere with your view of the green.13The longest par-3 on property plays from hilltop to hilltop, with the tees for #6Red forming the start of the fairway here. A safe play out to the right front ofthe green leaves a tricky chip to get close, but a safe four here is unlikely to lose much ground against one's opponent.14The toughest par-4 on either course, this one temps long hitters to hit a draw off the tee in order to scoot down a hidden slope on the left;but a straight ball to the high side of the fariway isn't a bad play. The tilt of the green is so pronounced that you are better off laying up short of the approach bunker, than playing too far left of it and leaving the green sliding away for your t15The tees here are shared with #4 Red,playing to different greens on either end of the hole. You'll have to carry the mounded bunker at the front right, and the green is set well behind those mounds, so take plenty of 16A difficult four from the back and middle tees, here the drive must take on the right-hand bunkers. The green sets up as a classic Biarritz, with the small front and back plateaus divided by a deep swale, A safe approach to the front of the green is preferable than trying to make17This par-5 is very reachable from all but the far back tee,but your second shot will have to clear a big dip on the approach, and then stop very quickly on the green. Putts from behind the hole are quite fast.18One of the toughest tee shots on the course, you'll have to carry about 200 yards from the back to get up to the top of the hill. The further to the right you can get, the better the angle of approach, but you have to avoid the bunkers and native grasses to the right of this fairway.
