Hole 1
Hole Name Long Reach
From The Tee Long Reach is the longest hole on the course. Beware of the out of bounds wall on the left –
From The Fairway
On The Green better to play too far right. Also don’t pitch too long on to the green, the drop off the back and the rough is punishing – a baptism by fire especially when there is a strong wind coming in from the west.
Hole 2
Hole Name Penny Black
From The Tee A short par 3 with a small green which makes the Postage Stamp at Troon look gigantic.
From The Fairway
On The Green Better to be too short than too long as this elevated green sits in front of a row of trees and unplayable rough where balls can be all too easily lost.
Hole 3
Hole Name Chimney
From The Tee A downhill par 3 with commanding views but don’t be distracted. Great care is needed in all directions –
From The Fairway
On The Green too far left and you are over the wall and out of bounds – too far right and there are trees and a deep gully – too long and you will need crampons to get back up to the green. Straight down the chimney stack and on the green is the safest bet, if you can.
Hole 4
Hole Name The Throstle
From The Tee Be sure not to play the 13th by mistake – the 4th tee is further down the hill.
From The Fairway You have now reached the bottom of the course and the fairway slopes severely down to the left for the first 200 yards. Skim the left of the trees if you can or a shot over them onto the 13th fairway works well.
On The Green The fairway is more or less flat for the last 150 yards but the green slopes to the left – play to the right and hope for a friendly bounce – this green is not receptive!
Hole 5
Hole Name The Hagg
From The Tee A 251 yard hole, this is a relatively straightforward par 4 with a birdie opportunity.
From The Fairway Considering how wide the fairway is, it is surprising how easy it is to lose balls left and right. Play short of the hole and an uphill putt keeps life simple, above the hole and it becomes a lottery.
On The Green Make any mistake or run out of breath on the climb up the fairway and throughout the summer months there is invariably the lonesome call of a curlew offering sympathy.
Hole 6
Hole Name Hawk’s Drift
From The Tee From the par 5 white tees aim up the hill towards the marker post.
From The Fairway From the yellows and reds, a drive over the trees is recommended or slightly to the left as the sloping fairway will gather the ball to the right.
On The Green A gulley traverses the fairway; end up down there and even the tall indicator flag on the green disappears from view. You can use the slope on the left of the green to gather the ball to the flag but avoid the copse.
Hole 7
Hole Name The Crossing
From The Tee There is more than meets the eye.
From The Fairway The seventh is the same length as the fifth and from the tee box looks relatively straightforward and surprisingly flat; but you would be wrong. Half way along the fairway there is a deep gully which suddenly drops 20 feet; down there everything disappears from view
On The Green . Big hitters should be wary of going for the green – to the right there is a severe drop with punishing rough – better to go left. The walk down and up the gully will sap your energy just before attempting a delicate chip to the green!
Hole 8
Hole Name The Grand Canyon
From The Tee A challenging dogleg where big hitters go for the gap in the trees or even the green.
From The Fairway If you are unsure it is better to play safe to the right of the trees although the elevated tee does provide some scope to go over the top.
On The Green “Would be” big hitters lose a lot of balls here. The green slopes viciously to the back – don’t pitch long.
Hole 9
Hole Name Studdon Straight
From The Tee This relatively straightforward par 3 plays long due to some dead ground in front of the green.
From The Fairway
On The Green The bunker should not present a prO-Blem as it comes more into play on the 18th. A flat green, no trees, no punishing rough – a good birdie opportunity; perhaps.
