Hole 1
Hole Name
From The Tee For me the first is a tricky opening hole, the tee shot is fairly straightforward despite there being trees and out of bounds down the right there is a lot of room left!
From The Fairway
On The Green The second shot is played into a well-protected green with 2 well placed bunkers front left and right so the key for the second shot is to try and take those out of play.
Hole 2
Hole Name
From The Tee So we are now onto the 2nd, and I have to admit prO-Bably my least favourite tee shot on the course, particularly with the difficult recent winds blowing off of the sea! At 481 from the medal tees it certainly isn’t the longest par 5 you will face but it certainly is a testing tee shot.

Hole 3
Hole Name
From The Tee Onto hole 3 which presents a tee shot into a reasonably wide fairway depending on how far you want to go.

Hole 4
Hole Name
From The Tee The 4th hole, the first of 4 par 3s at Arbroath. At 166 yards from the medal tee, surrounded by a burn to the front and right of the green along with four bunkers guarding the green, it really is a test.
From The Fairway
On The Green The green slopes from left to right so even a ball making the putting surface requires plenty of concentration for the putt. My whole reason for doing this weekly hole guide is to try to get each of you to think your way around the golf course better.
Hole 5
Hole Name
From The Tee We are now onto the toughest hole on the course.
From The Fairway The wind plays a big part on this particular hole, downwind then many can reach this green in 2 but into the wind it can be as many as 4 to get home due to the burn that meanders its way across the fairway around 60 yards short of the green. Out of bounds all the way down the right and 3 excellently placed bunkers down the left it is clear to see why number 5 is stroke index 1!

Hole 6
Hole Name
From The Tee Onto hole number 6, one of my personal favourites here at Arbroath
From The Fairway I love the undulating fairway and sloping green along with the deep bunkers either side of the green. Despite not being the longest at 375 from the medal tees this hole can be anything from a drive and a flick if downwind to a drive and a 3 wood if into a strong wind! You have a nice wide fairway so driver off the tee is prO-Bably the preferred choice.
On The Green The key for me on this hole is taking enough club for your second shot. It is easy particularly into the wind to come up short on this hole so my suggestion would be to take an extra club and hit it a little softer to give yourself that birdie chance!
Hole 7
Hole Name
From The Tee An excellent par 3 that depending on tee
From The Fairway position and wind direction can vary from a wedge to a fairway wood! Whilst out on the course last Thursday afternoon I took a couple of videos of my playing partners playing the hole.
On The Green
Hole 8
Hole Name
From The Tee We are now onto hole number 8, another favourite of mine,
From The Fairway I love the undulating fairway and sloping green on this hole and despite the fact it is a fairly short hole a par is by no means guaranteed!!

Hole 9
Hole Name
From The Tee The 9th Hole at Arbroath, at 373 yards it won’t always play the longest but into a stiff breeze it can be a real test,
From The Fairway particularly with the burn meandering its way across the fairway just short of
On The Green the green. Off the tee it’s time to open up the shoulders and try to get one down there as far as possible. Even if you are a little right it isn’t the end of the world, which is a pleasant change at Arbroath!
Hole 10
Hole Name
From The Tee At 407 yards from the Medal tee, the 10th is one of the longer holes,
From The Fairway there is just one fairway bunker to contend with and one you definitely want to avoid! The burn is yet again in play on this hole and the
On The Green decision is whether to lay up and play as a 3 shot hole or take on the carry to go for the green in 2.
Hole 11
Hole Name
From The Tee Hole 11 is definitely a hole that you would consider a birdie chance!
From The Fairway That being said there are 2 fairway bunkers either side of the fairway which can catch a stray drive and then
On The Green the green is well guarded by 2 bunkers either side suddenly this isn’t sounding like such a birdie chance! The positives, however, are the distance of this hole.
Hole 12
Hole Name
From The Tee Now onto the 12th, a great short par 4 at 331 yards from the Medal tee!
From The Fairway
On The Green The tee shot on 12 is fairly straightforward the key is to play short of the bunkers and ideally be down the left side to fully open up the green. In total there are 6 bunkers guarding this hole and they are all pretty deep!
Hole 13
Hole Name
From The Tee At 412 yards from the medal tee, with out of bounds to the right,
From The Fairway a burn crossing the fairway at around 285 yards from the medal tee and then a raised
On The Green green a 5 here is by no means a disaster. As always the tee shot is important, for the longer hitter the vital thing is to use a club that will finish short of the burn.
Hole 14
Hole Name
From The Tee Often described as the signature hole here at Arbroath the 14th is prO-Bably the toughest hole to par on the course from the medal tees.
From The Fairway
On The Green At 239 yards from the medal tees and often playing into the wind for many, this green is out of reach in one. I always think how we look at holes such as this in a strange way; if this were a par 4 we would be thinking what an easy birdie chance!
Hole 15
Hole Name
From The Tee We are working our way down the closing stretch and after two really tough holes in 13 and 14, we have a real birdie opportunity at 15. At 355 yards from the Medal tee, the 15th isn’t a particularly long hole, however, there are 2 well-placed bunkers ready to catch out the aggressive play off the tee!
From The Fairway
On The Green
Hole 16
Hole Name
From The Tee Now onto the final par 3 here at Arbroath, at 182 yards from the Medal tee, the wind can make all the difference on this hole. Into the wind I have seen myself hitting 4 iron to get back to the back flag location and downwind with a front pin and slightly forward tee can be hitting a little Pitching Wedge! The beauty of links golf right there!

Hole 17
Hole Name
From The Tee We’ve made it to the penultimate hole, 17 an excellent hole for the closing stretch. From the Medal tee, the hole plays 495 yards, which as we have learnt over the past 17 weeks could play as a short par 5 if downwind or a bit of a monster if into the wind.

On The Green
Hole 18
Hole Name
From The Tee And so we step onto the 18th hole, at 407 yards from the Medal Tee this can be a bit of a brute when playing into the wind, or if the wind is hard off the left the out of bounds down the right is well in play.
