Hole 1
Hole Name orchard
From The Tee A challenging par 4, slight dog leg right,
From The Fairway requiring a drive to the top of the hill, ideally left of centre of the fairway for a clear view of the green with bunkers left and right.
On The Green Avoid a tee shot leaking right as you will either be blocked out by the hedgerow or worse still – out of bounds. There was originally an orchard sited to the right of the competition tee, adjacent to the farm – hence the name.
Hole 2
Hole Name punch bowl
From The Tee The second longest of the par threes - with a well protected undulating green with a narrow entry guarded by bunkers left and right.
From The Fairway
On The Green Correct club selection is key as there is heavy grass and small copse beyond the green. The name Punch Bowl is derived from the green’s original contours.
Hole 3
Hole Name Blasted ASh
From The Tee A good drive is the key to success on this apparently straightforward hole with out of bounds down
From The Fairway
On The Green the right and established trees and a well positioned bunker to the left. Care is required with the second shot to avoid the greenside bunkers left and right. The Blasted Ash is situated at the back of the 4th tee, left and short of the 3rd green.
Hole 4
Hole Name College Farm
From The Tee Again a good tee shot is essential on one of the longest par 4s on the course.
From The Fairway A drive favouring the left of the fairway, thereby avoiding the trees and shrubs to the right of the fairway, should provide a view of the well guarded green.
On The Green For the ladies this hole is par 5. College Farm is situated to the right of the fairway and is accessed by the track which crosses it, although the original farm and buildings were replaced by a house some years ago.
Hole 5
Hole Name May tree
From The Tee One of the shortest holes on the course but no easy touch –
From The Fairway
On The Green numerous hazards (bunkers, grass bunker and mound) await any off line tee shot. Study your line well as the green has more breaks than you might think. The May Tree is situated to the left hand side of the tee as you face the green.
Hole 6
Hole Name little pastures
From The Tee The first of the par 5s starts with a tee shot over Scots Pines!
From The Fairway A good drive just inside of the right hand bunker should run on to the centre of the fairway and could offer the option to go for the green,
On The Green but again beware of the bunkers left and right. Little Pastures is a reference to years gone by when the hole used to be flanked by a number of small pastures.
Hole 7
Hole Name Brook
From The Tee A tough par 4 with well placed fairway bunkers looking to gO-Bble up any wayward drives.
From The Fairway A second shot over the brook to an elevated green which slopes from back to front and is flanked by bunkers left and right.
On The Green Brook is a reference to the brook which runs through this hole (as well as the 10th, 11th and 15th) although this is not actually evident from the tee.
Hole 8
Hole Name twin woods
From The Tee The shortest of the par 4s with trees and a fairly deep bunker to the right and heavy rough to the left, and another bunker,
From The Fairway
On The Green a straight tee shot is a must. A line just inside of the left hand fairway bunker should leave you with a relatively short iron approach, but, once again, try and avoid those greenside bunkers. Twin Woods airfield is situated beyond the course boundary and it was from here that Glenn Miller made his fateful flight in 1944.
Hole 9
Hole Name simon's folly
From The Tee The longest par 3 on the course and prO-Bably the most challenging.
From The Fairway
On The Green Take plenty of club to make sure that you clear the large bunker in front of the green. A tee shot leaked either left or right is likely to find the trees. The hole is named as a memorial to one the club’s former greenkeepers, Jack Simons.
Hole 10
Hole Name Long Tom
From The Tee The tenth hole is comfortably the longest on the course and this is especially so from the medal tee.
From The Fairway An accurate drive is required to avoid the keenly placed fairway bunker on the left and a line of trees to the right of the fairway.
On The Green The brook meanders through the fairway approximately 100 yards from the elevated two tiered green, where finding the correct level is imperative. Long Tom is well deserving of its name.
Hole 11
Hole Name dog leg
From The Tee This lengthy par four dog legs left so favour the right centre of the fairway off the tee to avoid being blocked out by the trees on the left,
From The Fairway make sure that you avoid the fairway bunker on the extreme right of the fairway at the start of the dog leg. The undulating green is guarded by bunkers left and right and runs off at the back. For the ladies this hole is a par 5. The hole’s name prO-Bably requires little explanation.
On The Green
Hole 12
Hole Name BAULK
From The Tee Many a scorecard has been dented by this relatively innocuous looking par 3 with a large bunker in front of the green.
From The Fairway
On The Green The upturned saucer shaped green has banks on either side and falls away sharply at the back. Baulk is the area beyond the green where the 13th tee is situated which used to contain RAF billets.
Hole 13
Hole Name spinney
From The Tee The bunkers left and right of the fairway await any poorly directed drives –
From The Fairway as do a variety of trees for shots further offline. Longer hitters may fancy trying to ‘cut the corner’ on this right dog leg hole.
On The Green The green is, once again, protected by bunkers left and right. Spinney is a reference to the sizeable spinney which there used to be to the left of the fairway from the tee which was originally much larger and more dense than it is now.
Hole 14
Hole Name three threes
From The Tee A good drive between the bunkers should leave a relatively short approach to a well bunkered green full of subtle borrows.
From The Fairway
On The Green However, any wayward tee shot is likely to be punished as there are few ‘alternative routes’ to the green. The name Three Threes refer to the fact that, before it was lengthened some 30 or so years ago, it was originally 333yards long.
Hole 15
Hole Name Waafery
From The Tee An outstanding par 4 demanding two well hit shots if the green is to be reached in regulation.
From The Fairway If the distance isn’t challenge enough the hungry green side bunkers and sharply sloped green,
On The Green back to front, will be! Once again beware of the brook, this time it’s approximately 140 yards from the green. For the ladies this hole is a par 5. During World War II the area to the right of the 15th (as far as the road) contained a number of buildings occupied by the W.A.A.F.
Hole 16
Hole Name FIRS
From The Tee Another tee shot over Scots Pine to a green that’s always further beyond the trees than it appears from the tee.
From The Fairway
On The Green Hungry bunkers are positioned front of the green, left and right, and the edge of the green is banked beyond them. Firs is a reference to the splendid line of Scots Pine which cross this hole.
Hole 17
Hole Name tinsley
From The Tee Not a long par 4 but accuracy off the tee is again essential with trees left and right (and out of bounds beyond).
From The Fairway The fairway also slopes left to right. A good tee shot should leave a medium/short iron to another of those undulating, bunker guarded greens! Tinsley is the name of the family who farmed north of Clapham.
On The Green
Hole 18
Hole Name HOME
From The Tee A gentle par 5 dog leg to finish but beware the sizeable bunker right, just short of the brow of the hill,
From The Fairway (the fairway slopes heavily left to right) and a green which slopes front to back. Longer hitters may be able to get over the brow of the hill in order to set up a good birdie chance and finish their round in style. Home is O-Bviously an appropriate name for the finishing hole.
