Hole 1
Hole Name ASPIRATION
From The Tee A short par four up the hill which offers a gentle introduction to your round.
From The Fairway Avoid the trees to your right at the top of the hill or your second shot will be blocked out. A hooked drive will take you onto the sixth fairway
On The Green (beware people driving from the sixth tee) or, at worst, out of bounds across the driveway. The green is protected by bunkers left and right.'
Hole 2
Hole Name CASTLE
From The Tee A medium length par four down the hill.
From The Fairway There is a downward slope right to left, so try not to aim too far left on your drive. If you’re a slicer, beware the fairway bunker and trees to your right.
On The Green Ideal drive is to the right hand side of the fairway and it will run to the left. The second shot to the green, being downhill and on fast Summer ground, may require less than you think, or you run the risk of running off the back of the green. Bunker to the left of the approach.'
Hole 3
Hole Name DERBY TUP
From The Tee To the left of hole two's green – the third poses an interesting challenge.
From The Fairway This is a dogleg left with a wooded area to the left which is to be avoided. There is lots of room, however, to the right.
On The Green The ideal line is over, or just to one side of the hawthorn tree. Ensure your approach to the green is not too long … as out of bounds lurks close behind.'
Hole 4
Hole Name GRANGEWOOD
From The Tee Another short par four up the hill, which offers a good birdie chance
From The Fairway . Beware the sloping fairway for the first 200 yards, which gathers almost everything down to
On The Green the treeline on the right and may block your second shot. There’s a bunker protecting the green on the right and a ditch on the left.'
Hole 5
Hole Name THE STOOP
From The Tee A longer and more difficult hole.
From The Fairway A straight drive over the hawthorn bush will land you in best position. A hook will take you somewhere you don’t really want to be whereas a slice may take you into the tree line separating second and fifth fairways
On The Green and block you out. Your second shot, up the hill will prO-Bably need one more club than you think. Two bunkers, one behind the other, protect the left and a steep slope down protects the right.'
Hole 6
Hole Name BUTTS
From The Tee
From The Fairway To reach the tee, you have to cross the first fairway – look left and ensure that the tee is clear, or that you are waved across.
On The Green This is a medium distance par three from an elevated tee. All dangers are visible, except bunkers protecting the right and rear edges of the green. Again, with the downslope, do not overclub for the distance.'
Hole 7
Hole Name BESS’ HOME
From The Tee A slight dogleg right to left with all the dangers visible.
From The Fairway Keep your drive on the fairway to ensure a short second to the green. The woods on your right are not out of bounds, but are far from ideal to be in.
On The Green The green slopes upwards, so try to be shorter rather than longer with your approach shot to give yourself an uphill putt. Bunkers left and right of the green.'
Hole 8
Hole Name GORSY KNOLL
From The Tee An attractive layout and stroke index 18 may make you think this hole is easy.
From The Fairway However, you will see all the bunker protection! Trees to the left have an even greater magnetic attraction than those to the right - if you manage to avoid the bunkers!'
On The Green
Hole 9
Hole Name MURDER ALLEY
From The Tee The first of our par fives. A nice hole with a slight dogleg right to left on the first third of the hole.
From The Fairway When driving, beware the willow tree on your left. But the best drives will be fairly close to this line. Once on the fairway beyond the willow, you can see clearly what lays in wait.
On The Green The green slopes down right to left, so aim to the right on your approach shot.”
Hole 10
Hole Name BECK
From The Tee An attractive but difficult hole, downhill, across the stream and up to a
From The Fairway slightly elevated green. Par four for gents, Par five for ladies. Only a good drive will enable you to get to the green in two –
On The Green but beware the extended fairway bunker. Keep out of the trees on your right. If you have to lay up with your second shot, make sure you don’t send it too far so it runs into the stream. The green is protected by bunkers both left and right.'
Hole 11
Hole Name TRAPS
From The Tee Our second par five and the best birdie, or eagle, opportunity.
From The Fairway Keep your drive to the left of the fairway to avoid the early fairway bunker and trees unless you’re a really big hitter and the left hand fairway bunkers come into play.
On The Green There are bunkers hidden from view on the left hand approach to the green and immediately to the right of the green – the natural contour of the land may take an approach shot to the right and into one of the sand traps.'
Hole 12
Hole Name BROOKSIDE
From The Tee A par three which can be difficult depending on the prevailing wind,
From The Fairway
On The Green which is often into your face. No surprises as you can see all the dangers but the green slopes away from you after the front half or so.'
Hole 13
Hole Name LONG HOLT
From The Tee Welcome to our most difficult par four for gents, (par five for ladies).
From The Fairway A dogleg left to right where a good tee shot is a real benefit. Don’t go to the right or you may well loose your ball. Big hitters may find the fairway bunker to the right of the fairway.
On The Green A good line is the telegraph pole on the far side of the fairway when following the line of the tee box. The green is protected by bunkers left and right and by a thick hedge just off the back. You’ll do well to come off here with a par. Don't be fooled by the yardage, the undulations on the fairway will significantly reduce any 'run' you'll get.'
Hole 14
Hole Name DEER PARK
From The Tee A beautiful hole, tucked away in the corner of the course.
From The Fairway You can see the line of trees to the left of the fairway to keep out of, but also beware the many traps on the right –
On The Green large shrubs, ditch and large fir tree, or if you’re a long hitter, the fairway bunker. The green is protected left and right by bunkers.'
Hole 15
Hole Name FISHPOND
From The Tee Our final par three and back over the stream, which gives a good opportunity to chalk up that coveted two
From The Fairway
On The Green . If you’re not going to pitch directly onto the green aim slightly to the left as it will bounce and run towards the right. Anything hit to the right of the green will either land in a bunker or roll down towards the trees giving you a difficult chip up.'
Hole 16
Hole Name SOMERSALL
From The Tee An uphill hole which plays longer than the scorecard suggests.
From The Fairway Try not to slice or block your drive into the silver birch trees.
On The Green Take a club more than you think with your second shot to get up onto the green. Bunkers protect the right side of the green.'
Hole 17
Hole Name THE OAKS
From The Tee A beauty which is similar to, if a little shorter than, hole ten.
From The Fairway A good drive will give you a pop at the green. Remember though that this
On The Green green is more elevated and may need a little more club to reach. Bunkers protect left and right, assuming you’ve actually got over the stream and up the bank!'
Hole 18
Hole Name CENTENNIAL
From The Tee It's home time - and what a way to finish! A lovely par five back across the stream,
From The Fairway up one slope, down a bit, and then a long gentle slope up to the green. Try not to slice your drive…
On The Green you may not find your ball. Bunkers protect much of the approach to this two-tier Mackenzie green. A good play will be a drive to the top of or just beyond the first slope a medium iron to around the 100 yard marker and a wedge up to the green.'
