Hole 1
Hole Name
From The Tee While there are some bunkers to contend with on the tee shot and near the green, this is just about the best scoring opportunity on the golf course and has awesome opening views.
From The Fairway
On The Green
Hole 2
Hole Name
From The Tee The real danger is the bunker dead center in front of the green. Take enough club to reach center.
From The Fairway The player can face some very long and very sweeping putts if the shot doesn't get too close to the pin
On The Green The green on this slightly downhill par three is unusual in a lot of ways. First, it is huge. Second, it has slopes that are designed to keep most shots on the green. Third, is has a pretty strong right to left slope in most places.
Hole 3
Hole Name
From The Tee This short par four is short and has a lake to the right (only one on the course). There are also two large bunkers that the golfer can find from the tee box.
From The Fairway Being such a short hole, only two accurate irons are needed.
On The Green The green is tiny and has severe slopes that will reject shots that don't find it.
Hole 4
Hole Name
From The Tee From the two back set of tees this drive is very hard. The landing area has deep bunkers to the left and one to the right but they are offset in yardage as well, making figuring out line and distance critical, but if the player gets it wrong, it's trouble
From The Fairway Either way, the second shot is way uphill to a large green that will reject short shots or push them into the deep pot bunker to the right of the green.
On The Green
Hole 5
Hole Name
From The Tee This downhill par four doglegs right around two bunkers on the right side. Going right of them is trouble in the form of desert.
From The Fairway The green is also perched near the desert but has a forgiving slope to its left that may help shots down onto the green that miss slightly to that side.
On The Green
Hole 6
Hole Name
From The Tee This uphill par five is probably the most mundane looking hole on either course, but it is also quite a challenge.
From The Fairway The cross bunkers on the second shot are at different distances and they cover a large portion of the fairway
On The Green getting over them makes the approach to the green, which wraps around a massive bunker, a lot easier, but going in any of the sand traps will tend to kill any chance of par or better.
Hole 7
Hole Name
From The Tee Yet another downhill hole facing the ocean, this one is a long par four with a big bunker in the fairway that has to be avoided (can be flown by most golfers). The fairway pinches in the from the right, so the better drive is indeed over the bunker.
From The Fairway From there, the hole is way downhill to a narrow green that is 50 yards deep
On The Green The bunker short is at least 30 yards short of the surface and the green has lots of humps and bumps of it on all sides.
Hole 8
Hole Name
From The Tee The best uphill hole on the front nine is this tough par four. With desert wash all the way down the right side and one of the tighter fairways, the driver must pound a straight drive here.
From The Fairway The second is then uphill again, over the desert (and maybe an El Cardonal cactus or two) to a tricky boomerang shaped green
On The Green The green has a false front and two bunkers that will gobble up errant shots
Hole 9
Hole Name
From The Tee Like most of the holes on El Cardonal, this one also has an outstanding ocean view; the par three really has one main challenge, and that is to avoid any type of sand short or left
From The Fairway If that can be managed, then a decent shot at par will be manageable with a decent chip or putting effort
On The Green
Hole 10
Hole Name
From The Tee At first, this hole appears to be a short, throw-away par four. It is uphill and features several bunkers in the fairway that need to be avoided.
From The Fairway That part is quite achievable and the golfer can still have a short iron in their hand for the approach.
On The Green The green, however, has a really deep bunker in the front that carves the putting surface into strategic sessions. Generally, long of that bunker by 10 yards is the smartest play but it is amazing how this seemingly easy hole tends to yield so few birdies.
Hole 11
Hole Name
From The Tee This downhill par three has a sweeping view; pins cut left of center are very difficult to access behind the massive bunkers. Those center or right are more manageable, but beware that shots tend to run out and will fall into the bunker or swale behind the green quite easily.
From The Fairway
On The Green The green generally runs away.
Hole 12
Hole Name
From The Tee Tiger mostly played nice on most of the course, but the 12th is an exception. Uphill all the way, there is desert hazard on both sides of the fairway. The best line off the tee is over the bunker on the left side.
From The Fairway The green complex is set way uphill and if anything comes up short or right, it will be rejected back down the slope 20 to 50 yards to leave a nasty chip shot.
On The Green
Hole 13
Hole Name
From The Tee This is a solid downhill dogleg right par four. There are no bunkers in the fairway and only one on the hole, which really isn't close to the green
From The Fairway But, there are a lot of natural contours that can leave interesting lies and there is desert that tracks just off the right side the entire hole.
On The Green
Hole 14
Hole Name
From The Tee This par five is uphill all the way and has desert up the left side of the driving area.
From The Fairway The second shot can either cross back over the desert for a better angle or stay right if the golfer is a little squeamish or hits a bad drive.
On The Green Front and middle pins are fairly accessible, but the back pin up the tier is really tough.
Hole 15
Hole Name
From The Tee The drive here looks a lot more difficult than it is. It's over desert but not a lot of it and the bunkering down the left side looks like there is no room, but there is 50 yards between the bunkers on that side. There is also a good chunk of real estate on the right side too.
From The Fairway There is no sand on the approach, just one large El Cardonal and a lot of slopes around the large putting surface. The second shot cannot go left at all cost, but if it is hit towards the right side of the green it usually works its way down towards the pin.
On The Green
Hole 16
Hole Name
From The Tee Short, but uphill and nasty, this par three has hazard fronting the entire green right and left with only the back middle spot over the green providing any bailout and even then, not much.
From The Fairway
On The Green
Hole 17
Hole Name
From The Tee On a course full of downhill par fours, this one takes the cake. It is large in scale and sweeping, with great views and a lot of obvious trouble to the left.
From The Fairway The second shot is a tough one with bunkers to the left and front of the green and hazard left of that.
On The Green The green also is diagonally running from front right to back left, so a draw is a much better play, if one has that in the bag.
Hole 18
Hole Name
From The Tee The rounds ends like it begins, with a great scoring chance with a downhill par five. This one is decidedly tighter off the tee than the first hole, and has bunkers that have to be avoided (but can be challenged).
From The Fairway Then, the second shot has two more bunkers to avoid, but this is easy as the fairway is very wide.
On The Green The green is then long and narrow, and the player simply must not go left or long, which will send the shot into a bunker or down steep slopes.
