Hole 1
Hole Name
From The Tee Spruce 1 eases you into the beauty and challenge you are about to experience at the Innisfail Golf Club.
From The Fairway One of the few straightforward tee shots finds the only real trouble coming from the trees down the left-hand side, or for the extremely long hitter the creek that runs across the fairway. The approach shot is where the fun begins. Spruce 1 marks the first of four multi-tiered greens on this side, making club selection very important.
On The Green Mounds on the left-hand side will kick balls away from the flag and a bunker on the right will punish any shots that veer offline. A tough two-putt is all that greets you when you reach the green – making a good score here will be extremely difficult.
Hole 2
Hole Name
From The Tee Spruce 2 provides another test of accuracy over power on your tee shot. Simply avoiding the fairway bunker that protects the left side of the hole is not your only problem.
From The Fairway The fairway is firm and dramatically runs off the backside of that bunker and into the trees on the right. The best play here is a shot measuring approximately 220 yards. This will leave you just under 150 yards into a subtly tiered green protected by bunkers on either side.
On The Green Putting on this large green can be tricky as the entire green slopes from left to right leaving most right-handed players the undesired slice putt.
Hole 3
Hole Name
From The Tee Spruce 3 is your first big test on this side. A long, uphill par 4 that is home to one of the most demanding tee shots & challenging greens.
From The Fairway The fairway bunker on the left-hand side is a good target but make sure to stay right of it. A large clump of trees and brush will grab all shots that stray too far to the right.
On The Green he difficult approach shot plays uphill and is protected by a large, clover-shaped bunker in the front left. One of the largest, tiered green on the course, the small false front can make even the best putters struggle to get down in 2.
Hole 4
Hole Name
From The Tee Spruce 4 is a visually spectacular, downhill par 3 that displays the sheer beauty of the Innisfail Golf Club.
From The Fairway Club choice off the tee is of the utmost importance here as swirling winds found at one of the highest points of the course can wreak havoc on the flight of the ball. A good practice here is about 2 clubs less than the yardage if struck properly.
On The Green The three bunkers surrounding the green provide the only additional protection to the hole. When reading the green be sure to look at all the angles as there are some very subtle breaks caused by the pull from Hazelwood Lake.
Hole 5
Hole Name
From The Tee Spruce 5, although lined by dense bush on the right and Hazelwood Lake on the left, definitely provides an opportunity to score well. Off the tee, you will want to favour the right side as large hills will kick your ball back towards the middle.
From The Fairway Whether you decide to go for it or lay up accuracy is a must. A narrow opening gives you access to the well-bunkered green, while collection areas exist on the putting surface on the left and back portions of the green.
On The Green This is definitely one of the few birdie opportunities, but you still must hit good shots.
Hole 6
Hole Name
From The Tee Spruce 6 is a deceptive hole that greets you after the refreshment shack here on Spruce. Accuracy and precision are more important than power and distance. Off the tee, you will want to favour the right-hand side as the fairway does slope to the left.
From The Fairway The approach shot is tough and deceiving, as you will most likely not have a flat lie. The green is much deeper than it appears from the fairway so choose your club carefully.
On The Green Putting on this green is typical of IGC tough and subtle breaks combined with a false front can lead to 3-putt quite easily.
Hole 7
Hole Name
From The Tee Spruce 7 is one of the easier holes on the course. It is a medium-length par 3 where the only real danger is the small pot bunker, named “Newman” around here, guarding the front-middle of the green.
From The Fairway
On The Green The putting surface is fairly large and like every green at Innisfail has a large amount of slope, but hit a good shot here and par should not be overly difficult.
Hole 8
Hole Name
From The Tee Spruce 8 is by far the most difficult hole on this side. The elevated tee box provides players with a wonderful overview of the hole. The conservative play is to hit it to the bottom of the hill, leaving between 150-165 yards left to the green.
From The Fairway Aggressive or long hitters can try and get to the top of the hill, making the approach shot much easier but be cautious, the fairway becomes quite narrow and the trees are a black hole for golf balls.
On The Green Approach shots played from the bottom of the hill should be adjusted about 1/2 club more to compensate for the incline in the shot. The green is an upside-down bowl shape that runs off in all directions if your yardage isn’t precise.
Hole 9
Hole Name
From The Tee Spruce 9 side finally provides a little room to breathe off the tee. The widest fairway on the golf course if you can get by the corner trees on the right about 215 yards off the box.
From The Fairway From there it is a pretty simple uphill par 5. Longer hitters will have a chance to reach this green with a mid-long iron shot into the two-tiered green. The conservative play is to lay up, taking bunkers that protect the right side of the green out of play.
On The Green Finding the wrong level of the green will cause major problems as judging the speed both up and down the tier will prove difficult, 5 is a solid score here.
Hole 10
Hole Name
From The Tee
From The Fairway
On The Green As is the case for all of Innisfail’s 27 holes, the green is large and laced with undulating slopes and massive breaks.
Hole 11
Hole Name
From The Tee The first of two par 5s on the Aspen side is a medium-length, dog-leg left par 5 that looks fairly straightforward from the tee.
From The Fairway However, with a perfectly placed tee shot from medium to long hitters, this hole becomes the ultimate in risk/reward. Going for the green in two will require an extremely precise shot, with a large pond protecting the majority of green.
On The Green This brings bogey or worse into play. Laying up is no guarantee either, with the fairway narrowing at 100 yards and bunkers there to grab any wayward shots. Walk away with a par and consider it a victory.
Hole 12
Hole Name
From The Tee One of the most spectacular views of the Central Alberta prairies greets you as you step up on the tee of Aspen 3. A drastic downhill tee shot requires a long iron or fairway metal to avoid running into the pond, which also guards the left side of the green.
From The Fairway Your approach shot has to be judged correctly depending on the pin position, as a large bowl in the middle of the green will penalize any miscalculations and make putting quite the challenge.
On The Green
Hole 13
Hole Name
From The Tee Aspen 4 is the second of the par 5s on this side and is the longest hole we have at IGC measuring 570 yards from the back tee. In order to escape with a par or better, it will require three well-played shots to reach the green and laser focus on the green to get down in two.
From The Fairway The fairway is split with a large spruce tree giving an excellent target off the tee. Longer hitters beware – the downhill section at the end of the fairway can leave an awkward stance if you go too far. The layup area has a drastic slope from left to right which gathers balls around the 100-yard marker.
On The Green Offline shots have the chance of finding a bunker, or the hazard that goes along the entire right-hand side of the hole. The two-tiered green slopes hard from left to right and is a tough two-putt.
Hole 14
Hole Name
From The Tee Aspen 5 is the first of the par 3s on this side and provides a spectacular view of Hazelwood Lake. Unfortunately, your ball must carry this lake in order to reach the green.
From The Fairway As the case with most holes on this side, the green is large, undulating, and protected by a number of bunkers.
On The Green The most unique part of this elegant hole is that it can require you to hit up to three different clubs depending on wind direction and hole location.
Hole 15
Hole Name
From The Tee Aspen 6 is the toughest hole on the Aspen side and it begins with the most demanding tee shot, especially from the black tee box. An uphill dogleg left par 4,
From The Fairway Aspen 6 requires two accurate shots to give you a chance at par. The main defense of this hole is its extremely large green with a number of collection areas aimed to gather miscalculated or errant approach shots.
On The Green As is normal around IGC, putting is a challenge as well. The large slopes and tier-like reactions of the collection areas mean your pace and line have to be spot-on to make a putt on this green.
Hole 16
Hole Name
From The Tee The last leg of the Aspen nine begins with Aspen 7, a short but challenging par 4. The tee shot plays extremely uphill and requires some air under the ball in order to reach the fairway, which has a saddle-type feel to it.
From The Fairway The large spruce tree seen from the tee is a perfect aiming point, but it also provides the hole some protection. You will find yourself in a sticky situation if you happen to end up behind it.
On The Green Your approach shot will play at least a 1/2 club longer, as the green continues the elevation trend of this hole. Bunkers surround this green to catch all miss-hit or mis-yardaged shots. Once on the green, the slopes and breaks are subtle, but make no mistake – it still has the essence of IGC in it.
Hole 17
Hole Name
From The Tee Aspen 8 is home to one of the most demanding tee shots on the course. A sharp dogleg right, that is protected by a large spruce tree on the right, requires a long accurate shot to the 150 yard marker.
From The Fairway There is no room to bail left either as a collection of trees is awaiting any shots headed in that direction. The large green is slightly elevated from the fairway and is protected by bunkers to the left and right.
On The Green It is a large putting surface with a collection area on the left-hand side that swallows up all offline iron shots. Putting is relatively straight-forward on this green, but still requires your attention.
Hole 18
Hole Name
From The Tee Aspen 9 is one of the hardest holes of the entire course. A long par 3, to a slightly elevated, well-protected, and extremely undulating green.
From The Fairway The two large and deep bunkers are near impossible to get up and down from.
On The Green The green slopes drastically off each side which makes holding the green extremely difficult. Never take anything for granted on this hole – par is a great score here.
