Hole 1
Hole Name
From The Tee WOODHEAD The opening hole of any course is normally a gentle affair to ease you into the round but here at Loudoun you are challenged from the start.
From The Fairway A tree lined fairway requires a solid drive favouring the right half of the fairway as this offers the best angle for the blind second shot to a difficult sloping green, take par and move on!
On The Green
Hole 2
Hole Name
From The Tee CUCKOO''''''''''''''''S REST When you arrive on the second tee it may not be O-Bvious what you need to do as
From The Fairway the fairway is partially hidden dog legging left to right and the tee-shot drops by around 35 feet. The 2nd may be a short par 4 and a scoring opportunity but the drive really needs to find the fairway as the trees are dense on both sides of the fairway, perhaps a hole to leave the driver in the bag.
On The Green
Hole 3
Hole Name
From The Tee ELBOW As the name suggests we have another dog leg and again left to right.
From The Fairway Another scoring chance if the second shot is played from the fairway but there is lots of trouble awaiting.
On The Green A burn runs the length of the hole and surrounds the green, trees also left and right and a fairway bunker recently added means the hole requires your full attention
Hole 4
Hole Name
From The Tee BIG WOOD This hole was added to the course around the mid 1990’s and added a new dimension to the start at Loudoun.
From The Fairway
On The Green This is a cracking Par 3 with a newly updated green offering some additional hole locations and the wind plays a large part in what club you need to hit on this hole. The right side is protected by two mid-size bunkers and trees again guarding the left although there is space as a bail out there. Once again par is a good score.
Hole 5
Hole Name
From The Tee CASTLE Another of the newer additions to the course that offers the one and only par 5,
From The Fairway you may look at the length and think it is a chance to make birdie but this is another trouble filled hole to accept par on. From the tee you need to drive through a chute of trees like the 18th at Augusta but this is downhill towards a waiting burn the crosses the fairway around 250 yards so lay up is the correct play as over the burn the fairway
On The Green the rises steeply and does not offer a good opportunity to hit the difficult green in two. The green itself has undergone some changes with bunkers left and right and not too far behind the green is out of bounds.
Hole 6
Hole Name
From The Tee MOUNDS Tricky driving hole for most here as two large old trees O-Bscure the view to the hole as
From The Fairway the fairway doglegs from left to right down towards a generous green. A drive to the right of the fairway shall almost always result in a chip out due to the large variety of trees down the length of the rough, there are trees down the left rough but more sparse and further to reach.
On The Green A drive or three metal would to the elbow of the dogleg offers a good view down to the green and a mid-iron approach.
Hole 7
Hole Name
From The Tee LIMES Toughest hole on the golf course long, tree lined with a
From The Fairway
On The Green slight dogleg left and what looks like a very small green surrounded by bunkers. Not only position of the tee but you need to hit one of the best due to the length of the hole the entrance to the green is narrow and the lie of the land tends to kick any ball landing short towards one of the waiting bunkers.
Hole 8
Hole Name
From The Tee HOWF The 8th hole is a decent chance to repair any damage done during the recent tougher holes,
From The Fairway
On The Green a straightaway drive will offer you the chance to hit a mid-iron into the green. The surface has some subtle borrows so if you find the green take your time over the putt and make it count.
Hole 9
Hole Name
From The Tee WARREN This hole used to sport an “internal” out of bounds but the ditch was filled in and no longer protects the hole, however over the years a forest has grown up the right of the hole and again a drive to the right can often lead to a chip out sideways.
From The Fairway The fairway has a large dip and a slight turn to the right you find a very well bunkered hole with the recently upgraded green.
On The Green The green is now larger and slopes from back to front offering many more pin positions for the green staff to tempt the golfer with. Not a long hole but this could finish off your front nine with a smile or frown!
Hole 10
Hole Name
From The Tee AVENUE The first of 4 par 3’s on the back 9 making this a shorter but questionably tougher half on which to score.
From The Fairway
On The Green At over 215 yards from the medal tee the hole is straight away with bunkers left and right. Get on the green with your tee-shot and take par and you have picked up at least half a shot on most of your competitors.
Hole 11
Hole Name
From The Tee BURN Another par 3 this time length not really the prO-Blem as unless the wind requires it a mid-iron should again be suitable to hit the green but beware.
From The Fairway
On The Green The burn, as in the title runs the length of the hole and skirts the right side of the green with a bunker to the left offering no simple bail out. Ideally you need to hit one more club than you think as a sloping false front to the green gathers the ball back down to the front of the green leaving a tricky two putt for par on an undulating surface.
Hole 12
Hole Name
From The Tee MARSH The burn continues from the 11th and bisects the
From The Fairway 12th hole offering two small fairways to aim for.
On The Green The play over the burn offers the better second shot back across to a green surrounded by the offending burn! A precise tee-shot and second can again offer a good scoring chance as this is the shortest par 4 on the course. This could be the signature hole here at Loudoun and also sports our centenary bridge.
Hole 13
Hole Name
From The Tee WESTWARD-HO We are now at the business end of the golf course and if things have gone well so far you need to re-group as you are now going to be tested all the way home. Stroke 2 on the card is again an apparently straight away par 4 but at over 400 yards this is all but easy.
From The Fairway Two fairway bunkers narrow the fairway for the longer hitters but playing from short of the bunkers will still need a long club to get the distance required to get to
On The Green the green which is again well guarded by bunkers left and right.
Hole 14
Hole Name
From The Tee LANG LUIK Longer than Stroke 1 this hole has more challenges as well,
From The Fairway fairway bunkers, trees left and right, thick rough and do not mention the A71 road to Edinburgh and out of bounds a few feet to the right of the tee!
On The Green The drive is all important here and you will again require two well struck shots to get this green for a well deserved par.
Hole 15
Hole Name
From The Tee ROAD The shortest par 4 on the final 6 holes but again you need to wary of the road on the right and many well positioned trees up the left of the hole.
From The Fairway The rough on the right of a left to right sloping fairway is also very thick and best avoided.
On The Green I would suggest use a club that finds the fairway and offers you the chance to go for the green from the cut and prepared! The entrance to the green is so narrow that the shot needs to be flown in over the two front bunkers to the newer two tier green which makes this hole not a simple par even when on the dance floor in two!
Hole 16
Hole Name
From The Tee HAG Make par and smile walking to 17th tee! This tough par three often plays into the wind and can even require a driver to get there.
From The Fairway
On The Green The remodelled green has now two larger bunkers protecting the surface left and right, you will make par more often from short of the green than from either of these bunkers. There is also a bunker at the back of the green but it is very rarely in use.
Hole 17
Hole Name
From The Tee PLATEAU According to the Stroke Index this is the easiest hole on the golf course! Nearly
From The Fairway 160 yards uphill and again sand is awaiting a slightly errant shot, again an extra club is recommended as anything coming up short can end up 40 yards back down the fairway leaving the most difficult up and down for par.
On The Green
Hole 18
Hole Name
From The Tee THORN The longest par 4 on the course takes you home. A long straight drive is the order of the day but again anything left or right will be in long rough with some tree issues to contend with.
From The Fairway If you can get it onto the fairway you still have a long second shot up and over the rising fairway then down
On The Green to a large green bunkered left and right. Making a 4 here will always bring you into the clubhouse feeling satisfied as you need to play well to make this par.
