Hole 1
Hole Name
From The Tee The round begins with one of the most exhilarating opening tee shots in golf.
From The Fairway
On The Green The tee shot requires a forced carry over the beach and is played at an angle to the shape of the hole. Longer hitters will be tempted to take an aggressive line, leaving just a short iron into the green.
Hole 2
Hole Name
From The Tee The 2nd hole continues away from the clubhouse towards the duneland and
From The Fairway
On The Green presents a variety of strategies from the tee. Longer hitters will aim for best positioning as close as possible to the burn that requires only a short uphill second shot to the green.
Hole 3
Hole Name
From The Tee Set against the distant backdrop of the Paps of Jura, the 3rd hole presents the first blind tee shot of the round.
From The Fairway An accurate first shot is rewarded with longer hitters, who can carry the centre marker, benefitting from a downhill run out towards the first line of bunkering. The landing area is however deceptively open along the right-hand side of the fairway for the shorter hitter.
On The Green
Hole 4
Hole Name
From The Tee The shortest hole on the course is by no means the easiest.
From The Fairway
On The Green Take a moment to O-Bserve the view of Machrihanish Bay visible from the back tee, while you consider club choice. Two cavernous bunkers will swallow anything that comes up short. Two further bunkers sit to the right of the green.
Hole 5
Hole Name
From The Tee The 5th hole marks the beginning of “the gauntlet” – a series of challenging and penal tee shots that demand precision.
From The Fairway For the remainder of the front 9, a ball in play off the tee is a relief. The drive is played to a fairway that collects from both sides. A deep bunker lies just to the left of the fairway, with the right lined by fescue-covered dunes. A drive that finds the fairway will be rewarded with a short approach in.
On The Green
Hole 6
Hole Name
From The Tee Another blind tee shot, the 6th hole works through the dunes and offers a good scoring opportunity.
From The Fairway The best line is slightly right of the centre marker where long hitters can again get significant run out from the downward slopes of the contours in the fairway.
On The Green
Hole 7
Hole Name
From The Tee The 7th tee shot is one of the most difficult on the course.
From The Fairway Dunes on the right side between the tee and the fairway O-Bscure part of the right portion of the fairway, making the playing area appear smaller than it really is. While there is some space out right, the left half of the fairway is a better spot from which to hit the approach.
On The Green
Hole 8
Hole Name
From The Tee The 8th tee is the highest teeing ground on the course.
From The Fairway The hole doesn’t play long, but positioning off the tee is key. The drive is played to a fairway below that lies just beyond two dunes either side of the start of the fairway.
On The Green
Hole 9
Hole Name
From The Tee With a tee box placed under the highest dunes separating the course from Machrihanish Beach, the 9th hole runs parallel to the furthest boundary of the property and offers some respite after a punishing run through the gauntlet.
From The Fairway There is a premium on an accurate tee shot with ample space directly over and to the left of the centre marker, however any drive moving right will risk bringing into play fairway contours that feed down into an area of thick rough.
