Hole 1
Hole Name
From The Tee
From The Fairway Though the fairway appears to be fairly generous, there is a small copse of trees on the right side that will complicate your approach shot if you leak your drive and end up stuck behind.
On The Green There is also a bunker on the left, so often the smart play is to use a fairway wood from the tee, and leave yourself a full short iron into the green.
Hole 2
Hole Name
From The Tee From the tee, the hole doglegs left and heads slightly uphill with trees down both sides of the fairway. A good, solid drive is essential to have any chance of getting home in two.
From The Fairway The obvious danger on your second shot is a line of trees down the left hand side, as well as a bunker and a fairway that angles away in that direction. It tends to encourage golfers to leak their second shot further to the right than is ideal.
On The Green This is where the 2nd hole can bite, as the undulating green is angled toward a steep fall off on its left, and protected by deep bunkers on the right. Golfers out of position, therefore, face a very awkward pitch shot across sand, and to a green that is running away from them.
Hole 3
Hole Name
From The Tee Making things challenging from the tee is a dam down the right hand side, and a fairway that also leans aggressively to the right. Drives are best played well down the left side, or with a club that doesn’t quite reach the water.
From The Fairway The approach is then a real feature of the course, with shots often played from a downhill lie and needing to avoid giant gums that guard the inside corner of the fairway, as well as bunkers that protect either side of an angled green.
On The Green The green slopes noticeably from back to front, so keeping your ball below the hole is essential if you hope to leave yourself with a makeable birdie putt.
Hole 4
Hole Name
From The Tee Along with the stunning water views at Mornington, are a number of holes that are memorable for their difficulty – such as the 4th, which many find to be the hardest hole on the course to par.
From The Fairway From the tee, the challenge is a tree-lined fairway that is narrow and angled severely to the left. Hitting the fairway with your tee shot is one thing, keeping your ball on the short grass is another.
On The Green Whether in the fairway or enjoying a decent lie in the rough, the second shot is even harder than the first. Not only is the approach shot uphill from a sidehill lie, the green is small and set beyond a nasty bunker on the left.
Hole 5
Hole Name
From The Tee The very definition of a sleeper par three, the 5th hole seems innocuous from its elevated tee pad, but boasts one of the more treacherous greens at Mornington.
From The Fairway With a nest of 3 bunkers on the right side of this green, the temptation for many is to pull their tee shot safely to the left. Unfortunately, missing the 5th green on the high left side can leave you with a very difficult, sidehill chip shot.
On The Green Leaving your ball beyond the hole can also be trouble, as putts down the hill are extremely quick. Although it may be easier said than done for many, positioning your tee ball under the hole here will give you a healthy advantage over your playing partners.
Hole 6
Hole Name
From The Tee From the tee your decision will be to aim up the bunkered right side, or to hit more safely down the left. There is more room down the left, but a prominent ridge leading into the green will obscure your view of the putting surface – and potentially kick your ball through the back of the green.
From The Fairway Like all good strategic par fours, the choice here is whether to take a risk on the drive, or leave yourself with the tougher approach. Those who play their tee shot successfully up the right side will be thinking birdie, as the angle from the higher side is ideal with the green shaped to feed your ball toward the pin.
On The Green Whatever your playing strategy, stunning views of Port Philip Bay and the Melbourne CBD as you approach the putting surface here on the 6th are sure to live long in the memory.
Hole 7
Hole Name
From The Tee The 7th at Mornington is regarded as our signature hole, and rightly celebrated for its panoramic views of Port Philip Bay, and a thrilling downhill tee shot played to a green that seems to hover above the beach at Mount Eliza.
From The Fairway Recent changes to bunkering have made the long, chasing tee shot even more fun to play, and manageable for many more golfers. Unless played into a strong wind, the best plan of attack with your tee shot is to land short of the putting surface, and to feed your ball on from the right hand side.
On The Green Although it’s a lengthy par three, there are many birdies on the 7th as the green is receptive to a well struck, and well judged, long-iron.
Hole 8
Hole Name
From The Tee Unless there is a strong southerly wind blowing, the 8th hole provides long hitters with a great chance at birdie. You’ll need two well struck shots however, and to take care around what is a fairly tricky green site.
From The Fairway From the tee the fairway leans toward trees running down the left hand side, so a fade is favoured, or a drive played accurately up the right side. The second half of the fairway is also angled from right to left, and dominated by tall trees that guard the inside corner of the dogleg.
On The Green Drawing your ball around these trees and feeding onto the green from distance is a great feeling, and provides your best opportunity at a sub-par score.
Hole 9
Hole Name
From The Tee Those able to play long and straight from the tee are rewarded with an approach that gets easier the closer you are to the green.
From The Fairway From distance it can be hard to accurately judge the second shot, and to pick the right club. A deep, nasty bunker on the left must be avoided at all cost, while going long will almost certainly lead to a bogey – or worse.
On The Green The safest miss on the new 9th green is out to the right, and a subtle chipping swale that still takes great skill to get up and down from. Pars here are well earned.
