Hole 1
Hole Name
From The Tee Keep your drive tight to the OO-B wall up the left.
From The Fairway
On The Green This makes the long approach to the 2 tiered green easier avoiding the deep bunker on the right side of the green.
Hole 2
Hole Name
From The Tee Legend has it that witches were burned on the knoll at the back of the green. As far as we know no ghosts have been seen or heard there… so far!

Hole 3
Hole Name
From The Tee This hole is named after the viewpoint on the hill beyond the green. On holing out, after toiling up the first three holes, the name seems apt.

Hole 4
Hole Name
From The Tee The spectacular view from the tee explains the name of the hole. The vista over Edinburgh must rank among the finest on any course.

Hole 5
Hole Name
From The Tee This is the field name on the estate plan. There is no clear record as to which king it refers to. Was it a step on the way to Holyrood, or more likely a step by King Arthur on the way to Arthur’s Seat?

Hole 6
Hole Name
From The Tee The hole is situated on part of the lands of Beechwood. The name is from the title deeds, but its origins are unknown. It may refer to the “sky of the hill”, meaning the ridge or summit whence water falls equally to one side or the other, or “sky” has also been defined as the skyline of the hill when standing at its base.

Hole 7
Hole Name
From The Tee
From The Fairway In 1904 the hole played from the tee between the 5th and 6th fairways was simply known as “Dykeside”, but the present hole was subsequently named as “Belmont” after the lands and estate of Belmont lying to the South. The hole now retains the historical connection with both names.

Hole 8
Hole Name
From The Tee This is the original field name based on the word “law” referring to a rounded hill or high ground, although we now usually use it to refer to a conical hill (e.g. North Berwick Law which can be seen from this hole on a clear day).

Hole 9
Hole Name
From The Tee The name speaks for itself. Early photographs show a more expansive view than that now available, which has been partially screened by the growth of trees.

Hole 11

Hole 12
Hole Name
From The Tee Named after the lands and Castle of Craigcrook, which lie adjacent to this hole. Craigcrook was feuded to John Leper in 1376. The original part of the existing building was built as a tower house in the 16th Century for William Adamson who was killed in the Battle of Pinkie in 1547.

Hole 15
Hole Name
From The Tee Also an original field name. It is clear that the low-lying ground between the 15th and 16th was originally a bog and was accordingly named in earlier times.

Hole 16

Hole 17
Hole Name
From The Tee A “bucht” is now a general term for a sheepfold. “The sheepfold on the hill”. There may be some connection with the “Witches’ Knoll” as according to old Border’s superstition the bucht door should always be shut at night as if it is left open witches and fairies will dance in it all night.

Hole 18
