An elevated tee shot into a tree-lined fairway that slopes from right to left will leave the golfer with a medium-range approach shot. This dogleg right par 4 features a well-protected green with bunkers on both the left and right and a false front which makes this a challenging but fair opener.

From The Fairway An accurate tee shot is required on this par 4, and if you make it out of the tree-lined chute into the safety of the fairway, you’ll be left with a mid-length approach to a large green. Approach shots will have to cover a large pond that protects the green from every angle. Shots that go long risk finding fescue and will leave a difficult shot back into a green that slopes back to front.

From The Fairway This straightaway par 4 starts with an intimidating tee shot as the fairway climbs uphill off the start. However, a good drive will leave a reasonable approach shot. Out of bounds runs along the right side of this hole, and a good tee shot favors the left. The approach narrows as you move towards this long green; bunkers and fescue will catch errant approach shots.

If you succeed in hitting the fairway, an uphill shot into the green that is at the furthest point on the property remains.

From The Fairway A short but challenging par 4 that requires less than driver off the tee for most players. Trees line the left and right sides of the fairway, and most second shots will be off a downhill lie. Approach shots must carry the water in front, avoid the bunker on the left and the large sycamore tree on the right. This green slopes back to front and is a great birdie opportunity.

From The Fairway The number one handicap at Philmont, hole 9 is a long, U-shaped par 5. Trees line both sides of the fairway and out of bounds guards the interior of the curve. Shot placement is vital as keeping the ball on the right half of the fairway will give you the best angle to approach this long, twin-tiered green that is well protected by bunkers.

However, the fairway slopes severely to the left, leaving shots in the tree line if not accounted for. 200 yards off the tee is adequate and will allow a full club into the green that features bunkering in front with sloping runoffs on the left, right, and back.
