Hole 1
Hole Name
From The Tee
From The Fairway A nice dogleg left par 4 to start your day. All this shot requires is for the player to take aim just right of a small cluster of trees on the left hand side of the fairway. This will then leave you a very easy 120 - 130 metre shot to the green.
On The Green Short of the green is much better than going long and be mindful of the out of bounds to the right of the green. A relatively flat putting surface, but be aware the grain will run towards the ocean on your right.
Hole 2
Hole Name
From The Tee
From The Fairway Take aim at the power pole in the distance. Longer hitters are best to avoid hitting driver as the fairway narrows and turns right considerably at 200m+. Once you have negotiated the drive you will be left with a pretty straight forward approach.
On The Green The bunker on the right hand side comes into play, so avoid this where possible and long of the green leaves a severe downhill chip. Underneath the hole is the best spot to be with short putts from pin-high leaving even the locals nervous.
Hole 3
Hole Name
From The Tee For bigger hitters this hole can quite easily be a very easy birdie chance, a drive left of the gum tree at the rise of the hill will allow you to take the chance of hitting it onto the green in 2 shots. The option is also there to take a lay up and will leave you with a shot inside of 100 meters.
From The Fairway The green is very approachable, but try to avoid missing the green left or right as this can make for a difficult up & down, while long is virtually impossible.
On The Green
Hole 4
Hole Name
From The Tee A cluster of gums is directly in sight, a tee shot perfectly placed right of this will leave you about 120 meters to a bunker guarded green. Anything right of this green will give you an easy chip or pitch should you miss. Bigger hitters can chose to take on the cluster of trees and leave themselves only a short pitch.
From The Fairway
On The Green This green is very sloped back-to-front and left-to-right, so try to always be below the hole on your approach and being in the bunker makes for a difficult shot with the green sloping away from you severely.
Hole 5
Hole Name
From The Tee This is a very strong 200 metre par three. It is a pretty straight forward tee shot, but will usually demand a precise fairway wood or driver. Longer hitters can play a long iron, but the hole generally plays into the wind.
From The Fairway
On The Green Once you get there the green is very quick in spots, and especially, if the flag is located on the front of the green always try to ensure you have an uphill putt. Par is a very good score.
Hole 6
Hole Name
From The Tee The smart play is to hit your tee shot to the left side of the fairway, roughly 200 metres, to leave you with a pretty straight forward 100 - 120 metre shot to the green.
From The Fairway
On The Green Be careful as the green can very be quick from the front to back. Longer hitters can dare to take the green on from the tee shot, but will require a very strong left-to-right ball flight, a great deal of risk for not a great deal of reward.
Hole 7
Hole Name
From The Tee The 2nd of the shorter par 5's, this hole requires a tee shot placed to the right side of the fairway, with out of bounds down the entire left side snaring any balls that stray too far.
From The Fairway Once your tee shot is negotiated it will allow you to then either have a crack at the green, or hit a lay up to about the 100 metre mark. Big hitters can chose a line down the left hand side of the fairway to carry the bunkers on the left hand side, which shortens the hole considerably.
On The Green Approaches to the green must have enough strength to get up the false front, but going long brings a tough chip and even the out-of-bounds fence into play. Putts on this green tend to break firmly right. A very good birdie chance if played well.
Hole 8
Hole Name
From The Tee Portland's signature hole, a short par 3 guarded by a large bunker at the front of the green. The ideal spot for your ball is in the middle of the green, below the hole.
From The Fairway If you do miss, anything short or on the right hand side gives you a chance to make par. Long or left can make your par attempt very challenging.
On The Green An uphill put will make life a lot easier as there are a number of very quick putts on this green from pin-high and above.
Hole 9
Hole Name
From The Tee
From The Fairway The easiest hole on the golf course. A fairway wood or hybrid from the tee can be the smart play as the fairway narrows at driver length but widens again for the longer hitters.
On The Green A well hit tee shot will leave you a short approach into a two-tiered green, where it is vital to be on the right level. Be mindful of the hazard on the right hand side of the green, known as ‘Robbo's Dam'.
Hole 10
Hole Name
From The Tee In the prevailing wind, this hole can play one of the hardest on the course. A well hit tee shot left of the gums located on the right hand side of the fairway will leave you with roughly a wedge in your hands.
From The Fairway The approach is to a very flat green with no real trouble to speak of, although a large mound to the left of the putting surface should be avoided.
On The Green
Hole 11
Hole Name
From The Tee On the card plays as only 155 meters, but can at times be one of the harder holes to negotiate. A well hit mid iron into this green will provide you with the greatest result.
From The Fairway Anything short will give you a pretty easy up and down, anything long and it'll require your best skills to give yourself a chance at par.
On The Green
Hole 12
Hole Name
From The Tee This hole is the hardest on the golf course and looks like it plays almost dead straight, but deceptively moves a little to the right. A driver off the tee down the right side and in the fairway will give you about a mid to low iron into the green.
From The Fairway
On The Green A few subtle breaks in the green are evident, so keep yourself putting uphill and par could be a good reward.
Hole 13
Hole Name
From The Tee This hole is open to many variations in the attack. You can go from ripping your driver up the left side to hitting a long iron up the left side, giving you the opportunity to hit to the 90º corner.
From The Fairway If you get your driver far enough up the fairway on the left side you can take on the pines to try to knock it on the green, but the safe play is to bite a small portion off the corner and approach the small green with a wedge in hand.
On The Green The putting surface is slightly raised making chips from the side precarious, while long can be a tough up and down.
Hole 14
Hole Name
From The Tee This is again a pretty straight forward golf hole. A well hit driver will leave you with a mid to short iron to the green, and there is a shade more room left off the tee than you think but going too far left will see you blocked out by a large pine or gambling on your lie in the rough.
From The Fairway
On The Green This green is very small in size, but it is very important to make sure that you hit it in the right spots. Like the majority of greens at Portland, if you're long it will be a pretty tough up and down, while left and right are no picnic either.
Hole 15
Hole Name
From The Tee One of the stronger golf holes on the Portland Course. A slightly hidden water hazard guards inside the left corner.
From The Fairway A well hit driver or fairway wood will allow you to hit to or even through the corner, and that completely opens up the green. This will then leave you roughly a mid iron or longer hitters may have a short iron in hand.
On The Green As with most of the greens, short is the place to be, as anything long will cause some trouble. Be mindful of the grass bunkers and water hazard on the left hand side of the green.
Hole 16
Hole Name
From The Tee Take aim just to the right of the cypress tree located on the left side of the fairway. A well hit driver will allow the player to then play straight down the fairway, setting up their 3rd shot to the green.
From The Fairway Longer hitters may dare to hit it over the cypress which will take some distance off the hole, allowing them to go for the green.
On The Green Your approach is to a relatively flat green giving you a good chance at birdie, but the green is fairly long so club choice is vital.
Hole 17
Hole Name
From The Tee Much the same as the 10th, this hole usually plays into the prevailing wind, making this the 5th toughest hole on the golf course. The cluster of gum trees on the left hand side of the fairway are about the usual driving distance.
From The Fairway Bigger hitters can carry this, leaving them with a very short distance to go. The general play would be to hit it right of the trees, in line with the mound located on the right side of the fairway.
On The Green This then leaves a long or mid iron to the green. Once again the green is pretty flat, and getting up and down should not cause too much trouble although downhill putts should be avoided if possible.
Hole 18
Hole Name
From The Tee A very strong finishing hole belying its 14 index, regularly playing its full 176 metres. You can quite often have a long iron in your hand, aiming at trying to make the best swing possible. Anything on the green will be a bonus on this hole.
From The Fairway
On The Green The green is possibly the largest at Portland and it's hard to find a straight putt. A 3 is a good score on this hole and will help you finish off your enjoyable round of golf at the Portland Golf Club.
