Hole 1
Hole Name
From The Tee A tough 406-yard par 4 to open the round, long and often played into a strong wind.
From The Fairway Out of bounds on the left and rough on the right makes the fairway look a lot narrower.
On The Green A good drive still leaves you a decent length shot to the largest green on the course, shared with the 4th.
Hole 2
Hole Name
From The Tee Hitting straight back, once again the drive is crucial on this shorter 371-yard par 4.
From The Fairway A straight drive is gathered as the fairway slopes from right to left leaving an ideal line to the guarded green. Too far right or left off the tee can be trouble.
On The Green A straight drive is gathered as the fairway slopes from right to left leaving an ideal line to the guarded green. Too far right or left off the tee can be trouble.
Hole 3
Hole Name
From The Tee This is the first of the par 3s on Thurso Golf Course. 186 yards and often hit with wicked crosswinds, this hole provides a tricky test.
From The Fairway
On The Green The pin placement favours the guarded right side of the green. The smart money is aiming for the open left and taking two putts. Beware of over clubbing as the ditch at the back catches many.
Hole 4
Hole Name
From The Tee This 504 yard par 5 requires a lot of thought. Each shot in turn demands concentration or face the consequences.
From The Fairway
On The Green The hole plays uphill and often into wind. The trees on the right act attract the majority of errant tee shots, but go left and it's often time to reload. The big hitters have a chance of getting up in two but the fairway narrows the closer you get to the green with strategically placed evergreens. The green is shared with the first so prepare for some monster putts.
Hole 5
Hole Name
From The Tee Distance is all-important on this 200-yard par 3.
From The Fairway
On The Green The hole slopes gently away at first before reaching a heavily sloped green that kicks on all but the purest shot. Trees are waiting to the left of the green and a steep slope into heavy rough awaits an errant shot to the right.
Hole 6
Hole Name
From The Tee This 345-yard dog-leg par 4 presents the first real chance to make a score.
From The Fairway Out of bounds on the left and trees on the right face the golfer standing back on the elevated tee. A good strike clearing the ditch placed 200 yards away and landing on the fairway below should present a real chance of getting it close in two.
On The Green
Hole 7
Hole Name
From The Tee The second of the two par 5’s measures 492 yards.
From The Fairway Like the previous, what it lacks in length, makes up in danger. Trees cutting into the right side of the fairway makes the tee shot favour the left. A high-sided protected ditch crossing the fairway also comes into play for the longer hitters or low hit second shots. A very tight landing area between trees makes for good shot selection essential.
On The Green
Hole 8
Hole Name
From The Tee The “easiest” hole on the course, but beware. This 263-yard par 4 has led to many ruined cards. It's a narrow route from the tee-box so straight off the tee is a must.
From The Fairway
On The Green Then you have to worry about the trees and bunkers left and right of the fairway.
Hole 9
Hole Name
From The Tee Tricky 158-yard par 3 with the tee shot to an elevated green.
From The Fairway
On The Green Distance is difficult to judge, as the bottom of the pin can’t be seen. Anything short will come back off the slope in front of the green leaving a difficult up and down. Trees await anything left, right or long.
Hole 10
Hole Name
From The Tee Tricky 158-yard par 3 with the tee shot to an elevated green.
From The Fairway
On The Green
Hole 11
Hole Name
From The Tee Lives up to its name and continues our very own "Amen Corner." This 368-yard hole doubles back alongside the 10th playing as a slight dog-leg to the left.
From The Fairway
On The Green The ditch that was troublesome before now cuts right across the fairway where the careless drive will fall foul. A second shot to the elevated green could leave you a treacherous putt on the heavily sloped putting surface. A 2 putt here is excellent.
Hole 12
Hole Name
From The Tee An imposing 223-yard par 3. Club selection is crucial, especially if the wind is gusting.
From The Fairway Difficult due to it’s length. There's a wide landing area, but anything too far right can be gO-Bbled up by rough and trees, anything too far left could mean reloading. If you go too long then you're in either gorse or a water hazard. Attention to detail is crucial.
On The Green
Hole 13
Hole Name
From The Tee The signature hole on the course. A short 279 yard par 4 may give an opportunity to pick up any dropped shots from “Amen Corner.” A good drive should be rewarded with a short second shot or even a putt. However the view from the elevated tee can lead to jitters with gorse directly in front and left, and unplayable rough ready to gO-Bble up a slice.
From The Fairway
On The Green
Hole 14
Hole Name
From The Tee Considered by many to be the most straight forward of the par 3s.
From The Fairway
On The Green A straight tee shot is required as the green is protected by grassy hillocks front left and right. This 161-yard par 3 can be a challenge with any leaked shots.
Hole 15
Hole Name
From The Tee Another opportunity is presented for the straight hitters on this 356-yard par 4.
From The Fairway Trees left and right tighten this fairway and no need to mention the field on the right forming out of bounds. A nice second shot may offer up the chance of “getting one back”.
On The Green
Hole 16
Hole Name
From The Tee Toughest hole on the course and has a stroke index to verify. A long par 4, covering 440-yards, usually into the teeth of a gale.
From The Fairway A long straight drive between the trees is required. Even the biggest of drives can be killed by the carefully positioned fairway upslope.
On The Green A long second shot faces the player with gorse and heavy rough to the right. Hit a ball too far and you will find yourself resting against the wall at the rear of the green or worse. The heavily sloped green usually adds insult to injury on this goliath.
Hole 17
Hole Name
From The Tee After surviving the 16th, what can go wrong? The 370 yard 17th is the answer.
From The Fairway
On The Green A daunting blind tee shot over gorse with out of bounds on the left and lateral water on the right. Fairway position is crucial to allow a true shot to the elevated green. Anything right or long finds trees and left........well, that out of bounds is very close.
Hole 18
Hole Name
From The Tee Superbly crafted final hole. A short 312 par 4 packed with danger.
From The Fairway There are trees on the left and close right. Heavy rough and ditches run up the right and across the fairway. This hole has it all.
On The Green The approach shot requires good distance control to allow the ball to stop on the heavily guarded elevated green. Fall short at your peril as two greenside bunkers await.
