Hole 1
Hole Name
From The Tee This simple looking hole fits perfectly into the philosophy of the great Scottish Links—it may look
From The Fairway docile, but it severely punishes golfers in a number of different ways. Most golfers aim to the left, as this first hole shares a fairway with the 18th hole,
On The Green just like at St. Andrews in Scotland. This design makes for one of the widest fairways in the game of golf.
Hole 2
Hole Name
From The Tee Carnoustie is one of the toughest, meanest, and most demanding courses in all of Scotland. “Brae”
From The Fairway is a tribute to the 5th hole of the championship course at Carnoustie and it presents players with a variety of options to attack the hole. All but the longest hitters must layup in front of a burn, which runs across the fairway midway from the green.
On The Green The green is long and slightly elevated with plenty of brae.
Hole 3
Hole Name
From The Tee In 1953, Ben Hogan won the Open at Carnoustie. This hole is styled after the 6th hole of the
From The Fairway championship course where Hogan chose the riskier play to the left of the bunkers leading to two birdies in the 36-hole final round. The “alley” left of the fairway bunkers is now aptly named, Hogan’s Alley
On The Green
Hole 4
Hole Name
From The Tee Northern Scotland’s championship course “Royal Dornoch” boasts a plateau green on its fourth hole,
From The Fairway
On The Green and is one of the best examples of a “Dornoch Green” in the game of golf. “Achinchanter” is a tribute to this famous hole. The original design of this green influenced famous course architect Donald Ross with some of his most notable projects throughout his career.
Hole 5
Hole Name
From The Tee Known simply as the “Postage Stamp”, this 5th hole is a tribute to the par 3 at Royal Troon Golf Club.
From The Fairway
On The Green Royal Troon's Postage Stamp is one of the shortest par 3 holes ever to be used for Major Championship golf and features a narrow, tough-to hit green. This sliver of a hole, which starts with an elevated tee to a clustered green, has dished out more sorrow than success over centuries.
Hole 6
Hole Name
From The Tee This hole is a tribute to the 1st hole at Machrihanish,
From The Fairway near Campbeltown on the Kintyre Peninsula of Scotland. Presumably the original “Cape” hole in golf, it is defined by a tee shot that allows you to cut off as much of the dogleg on the interior of the hole as you are confident in trying.
On The Green
Hole 7
Hole Name
From The Tee This hole is styled the fifth hole from the Alisa course; one of the most dramatic and difficult par 4s at Turnberry Golf Club; a 36 hole championship complex on the southern tip of Scotland.
From The Fairway
On The Green This hole will test your game with mounds and other native grass all along the left side. The green is narrow and steep with pot bunkers on the left and right.
Hole 8
Hole Name
From The Tee The “Coulart” is in tribute to the 4th hole of the Old Course at Moray Golf Club, one of the most interesting par 3s in Scotland.
From The Fairway
On The Green This hole has water and native grass all along the left side and less hospitable mounds on the right. Because the green is large and kidney shaped, the flag can be hidden on the right side behind a huge mid-green, or in plain sight in the middle of the green. This ensures there is not an easy path for a birdie or par.
Hole 9
Hole Name
From The Tee This hole is a tribute to the 9th hole at Muirfield, which is one of the most strategically designed par fives in the world.
From The Fairway
On The Green This par five forces you to ponder the various options with every shot. The initial drive can portend many things both good and bad. The best shot will reach the green in two or three shots, and the worst shots will be in deep trouble and drive up your scorecard. There is a large wall along the left side with native grasses to snare any misplaced first or second shots.
Hole 10
Hole Name
From The Tee “Eglington” is in tribute to the 9th hole at Prestwick which was originally laid out by Old Tom Morris, and home to the first Open Championship.
From The Fairway This hole is an immensely challenging par 4 with a green that runs away from the fairway.
On The Green It is 456 yards from the back tees with dense brush all along both sides. Players must confront a green which slopes severely downward midway through the surface. You will be penalized for anything less than two excellently played shots.
Hole 11
Hole Name
From The Tee “High” is a tribute to the 11th hole at St. Andrews, and is one of the best par 3s in all of golf.
From The Fairway
On The Green BO-Bby Jones famously picked up his ball and withdrew in disgust of the course on the 11th in the Open Championship of 1921. This hole features another straightforward design which can snare the simplest of shots with its steep elevated green and huge bunkers.
Hole 12
Hole Name
From The Tee “Wall” is a very imaginative par 5 that is a tribute to the 12th hole at Prestwick, one of the three original great courses in golf
From The Fairway Concentration is needed with every shot, as a fairly wide fairway leads to a very narrow and tight green opening.
On The Green There is ample room to drive along the left side as it borders the 10th hole, but the second and third shots are all important, as the protected green can be exceedingly hard to hit from long distances.
Hole 13
Hole Name
From The Tee Sutors is styled after the 15th hole at the Nairn Golf Club, the Scottish course that hosted the Walker Cup Matches of 1999.
From The Fairway
On The Green This hole showcases one of the greatest Scottish design insights, a drivable par four. At just 310 yards from the back tees, and 243 yards from the forward tees, the hole tempts you to think you can reach the green with a tee shot, but then greatly penalizes you if you come up short. This fairway is a series of rolling pitches up and down, which can send the ball careening in any direction if you
Hole 14
Hole Name
From The Tee This par three is a tribute to the 13th hole at Muirfield, one of the oldest and one of the most exclusive golf courses in Scotland. This is where the first Open Championship with over 72 holes was ever played in 1892. “Tripps Favorite” is 201 yards
From The Fairway
On The Green from the back of the tees with deep-set bunkers on each side of the green and mounding to provide natural beauty and at sunrise and sunset. This green can be very difficult at 44 yards, so it’s extremely important to gauge proper wind direction and club selection.
Hole 15
Hole Name
From The Tee This hole is a tribute to the 14th hole at Western Gailes; a true links course that opened in 1898. It is long and straight and can be mastered with the right shot.
From The Fairway Each route taken exposes you to more danger and challenge in your shot. “Whins” has been included in many lists of top holes in the world.
On The Green
Hole 16
Hole Name
From The Tee “Wee Burn” is styled after the 16th hole of the Ailsa Course at Turnberry, one of the best finishing stretch holes in golf.
From The Fairway
On The Green The Ailsa Course was the site of Tom Watson's and Jack Nicklaus’ epic battle in the 1977 Open. This relatively short par four, just 418 yards from the back markers, can greatly affect a players final score. It is possible to reach the burn with a tremendous tee shot, but the best players will lay back to leave themselves a short wedge to a heavily slanted green.
Hole 17
Hole Name
From The Tee Road Hole” is a tribute to the 17th hole of the Old Course at St. Andrews.
From The Fairway Which is arguably the most famous hole in the world, “road hole” at St. Andrews has bedeviled golfers for centuries with it’s length, design, and hidden dangers. Golfers must drive over a shed off the tee to a largely hidden fairway.
On The Green
Hole 18
Hole Name
From The Tee This spectacular finishing hole is a tribute to the 18th hole of the Old Course at St. Andrews, which has served as the conclusion of more Open Championships than any other
From The Fairway
On The Green This relatively simple hole features a large sloping green and the “Valley of Sin” found on the front of the green as its only real defenses. The burn runs right in front of the tee box with the famous Swilken Bridge where golfers traditionally pay their last respects to St. Andrews as they cross the water.
