Hole 1
Hole Name
From The Tee The 1st at Walpole is one of the most intimidating opening holes in Massachusetts.
From The Fairway
On The Green The hole measures only 364 yards from the back tees, but a carry of 160 to 200 yards is needed to clear the water from these markers. From the white tees, the carry can be from 140 to 180 yards, and from the Ladies markers it is still over 80 yards. Three imposing bunkers guard this relatively flat green.
Hole 2
Hole Name
From The Tee The 2nd hole doglegs to the left after the tee shot.
From The Fairway The target on the tee shot here is the triple-trunk tree through the fairway
On The Green . A shot of 220 yards from the back tees or 185 yards from the whites will put you in perfect position. You are left with about 160 yards to an elevated green. A deep bunker waits at the front of the green for those shots not cleanly struck. The green slopes considerably from back to front.
Hole 3
Hole Name
From The Tee The 3rd hole from the back tees plays at 175 yards.
From The Fairway
On The Green Two bunkers guard a pin placement on the left side of one of the biggest greens on the course. Long is trouble. A row of pine trees on the right side of the hole can come into play on a windy day.
Hole 4
Hole Name
From The Tee The 4th hole is the only par five on the front nine.
From The Fairway
On The Green The tee shot plays up hill. A drive that stays close to the tree line on the left will shorten the hole making the green reachable in two shots for the long hitters. This well bunkered green slopes from right to left making it tough to get even a short wedge close to the pin.
Hole 5
Hole Name
From The Tee The 5th hole is a straightaway par 4.
From The Fairway Two fairway bunkers are left of the landing area and out of bounds stakes run from tee to green on the left side as well.
On The Green The second shot is downhill making the shot play a little shorter than the yardage. Also, the downhill slope helps many shots reach the green. The undulations on the front of this green can make a front hole location treacherous.
Hole 6
Hole Name
From The Tee The 6th hole from the back markers plays 165 yards.
From The Fairway
On The Green Four bunkers protect the green and a shot missed left can kick down the slope and into the trees. This large green with its subtle undulations is one of the trickiest reads on the course.
Hole 7
Hole Name
From The Tee The 7th is the toughest hole on the course.
From The Fairway Favor the right side of the fairway on the tee shot, as the slope will bring it back towards the middle.
On The Green You could still have over 200 yards left after a good drive and this approach plays slightly longer than the yardage. A large deep bunker guards the left of the most difficult green at Walpole. It is not uncommon to see a player putt his ball right off the green.
Hole 8
Hole Name
From The Tee On the 8th you might not need driver, either way your tee shot will run a little left after it lands.
From The Fairway
On The Green A big tee shot will get to the bottom of the hill leaving only 120 yards in. If the ball doesn’t get to the bottom you’ll have a challenging downhill, sidehill lie. Two bunkers sit about 30 yards short of the green making it difficult to run a shot on. The 8th is another green that can be lightning fast.
Hole 9
Hole Name
From The Tee On the 9th hole, the pond comes into play about 190 yards from the white tees.
From The Fairway
On The Green An aggressive tee shot can leave just a short iron over water to this small two-tiered green. Some players find the devilish front bunker impossible and another deep bunker guards the right side of the green as well. Don't be long!
Hole 10
Hole Name
From The Tee
From The Fairway The hills to the left and right of the 10th fairway will keep a drive a little off line in the fairway.
On The Green Add at least one club for the uphill second shot. This green slopes gradually from back to front. A challenging start to the back nine.
Hole 11
Hole Name
From The Tee The 11th hole is the toughest par three on the course, over 200 yards from the back tees.
From The Fairway
On The Green Three large bunkers surround this narrow green. It is a difficult up and down from any approach for anyone who does not reach in regulation.
Hole 12
Hole Name
From The Tee The 12th is the first par five on the back nine. Aim the tee shot to the left of the big hill.
From The Fairway
On The Green This will allow you to see your landing area for your second shot. The big hitters may try to carry the corner of the hill on their tee shot making the green reachable in two. Four bunkers are positioned around the green allowing an alley for a shot to run on. This two-tiered green slopes from front to back.
Hole 13
Hole Name
From The Tee The 13th hole is a challenging, narrow dogleg left par four.
From The Fairway The right half of the fairway slopes away making it tough to stop a ball on the flat landing area in the middle.
On The Green Three more bunkers await errant approach shots to another two-tiered green.
Hole 14
Hole Name
From The Tee From the white markers, the 14th is nearly a 90-degree dogleg. From this tee it is only 200 yards to reach the dogleg.
From The Fairway
On The Green From the back tees a driver is the play. The left and right bunkering make it possible to run a shot onto this relatively flat green.
Hole 15
Hole Name
From The Tee The 15th hole is the shortest of the par fives at Walpole. Just aim between the two bunkers and rip it.
From The Fairway
On The Green A well struck tee shot will run down hill making this green very reachable in two. All shots that land beyond the two bunkers visible from the tee will run to the right. The green slopes from back to front and can be very fast. Staying below the hole here can save a shot or two.
Hole 16
Hole Name
From The Tee This challenging par four doglegs to the right. From the back markers a shot of 220 yards will give you a clear look at the hole while a shot of 200 yards will do the jO-B from the whites.
From The Fairway
On The Green This will leave a shot of about 150 yards into this slightly elevated green. An aggressive play here is to blast a high tee shot over the trees that guard the corner. If this play is well executed it could leave just 100 yards in. This tricky green slopes from back to front.
Hole 17
Hole Name
From The Tee The final par three of your round can be a 'Jekyl or Hyardse'. From the back markers this is a very difficult hole. From an elevated tee it’s 185 yards to small, well bunkered elevated green.
From The Fairway
On The Green From the white markers the hole measures just 140 yards, but it is a difficult up and down from any of the bunkers. This two-tier green slopes from back to front.
Hole 18
Hole Name
From The Tee At number 18, the last hole of the day, you are back to the same water hazard that you had to negotiate on Hole 1.
From The Fairway The toughest par four on the back nine, 18 is a challenge from tee to green. Tee strategy is very important here. Depending on whether you play from the Back or Middle tee box you will have a tee shot that offers the courses best risk reward option. A target can be chosen that requires a carry distance of anywhere from 160-280 yards. A safe or shorter target to the right can leave a shot in excess
On The Green Three bunkers surround this two tier green which is extremely fast from back to front. With the Club House circling the back of the green it is one of the most difficult and beautiful finishing holes in Massachusetts.
