Hole 1
Hole Name
From The Tee The best place to hit your drive on the fairway is down the right hand side as this will allow you to play your second shot up the left side as the fairway slopes to the right.
From The Fairway You will want to leave yourself a full shot for your third as hitting uphill to the green will reduce the amount of spin you will be able to impart on your ball.
On The Green Putting on the green should not pose a threat, however, putting from the back of the green can be tricky down the hill.
Hole 2
Hole Name
From The Tee
From The Fairway This fairway slopes from left to right so you will have to start your tee shot down the left hand side to allow your ball to finish on the fairway.
On The Green Your second shot to the green will be over well placed bunkers so you will need to make sure that you take enough club.
Hole 3
Hole Name
From The Tee Make sure that from the tee you do not take a club that will put you in or close to the gobbler on the right hand side of the fairway.
From The Fairway On your second shot, you will need to take into consideration the uphill lie. This will tend to pull the ball left, so aim at the right half of the green.
On The Green
Hole 4
Hole Name
From The Tee
From The Fairway The best play off the tee will be either a hybrid iron or a lofted fairway wood as accuracy is the key to playing this hole successfully.
On The Green Again, on your approach shot, the emphasis is on control as the green is long and narrow. A two pointer is always a good score on the 4th.
Hole 5
Hole Name
From The Tee Off the championship tee, this hole plays very long. The best play from the tee is to shape the ball from right to left off the right hand bunker.
From The Fairway The fairway is also guarded by a bunker on the left-hand side, and should your ball land in there, you will have a very long second to the green.
On The Green Playing from the fairway, the best play for your second is to favour the right hand side of the green as on the left you will battle to have a decent chip to the green.
Hole 6
Hole Name
From The Tee You could be faced with a tee shot ranging from an 8 iron to perhaps a lofted fairway wood.
From The Fairway You will need to avoid the bunkers in front and to the right of the green.
On The Green Putting on this hole can be tricky as the slope is severe from back to front and from right to left.
Hole 7
Hole Name
From The Tee Accuracy is once again the key on this hole. The fairway is guarded by a bunker on the left and a dam on the right.
From The Fairway Your approach shot to the green will be uphill to a two tiered green. The green is well guarded on the right by bunkers and to score well you will need to hit the green.
On The Green Putting up the slope is generally slow and will break severely from right to left.
Hole 8
Hole Name
From The Tee
From The Fairway A very short par 4 where a long iron off the tee will leave you with a relatively short iron approach.
On The Green The green is raised and very well protected by bunkers in the front. Your distance control is crucial as a shot hit long will pose a threat to your short game.
Hole 9
Hole Name
From The Tee From the tee, your biggest threat is the tall bluegum tree on the left-hand side. This poses as a problem as the tree prevents a fade off the tee and most golfers try and start the ball right with a draw.
From The Fairway Unfortunately this brings the out of bounds into play. You will also have to negotiate the bunkers lining the right-hand side of the fairway.
On The Green Your approach shot to the green is tricky as the green is very narrow. The best side to bring the ball in to the green is from the right as the green slopes severely from right to left.
Hole 10
Hole Name
From The Tee Out of bounds protects the right-hand side of the hole. Your tee shot will have to avoid the gobbler on the left-hand side of the fairway as well.
From The Fairway Your second shot will be played downhill to the green with dams protecting the left front and right-hand side of the green.
On The Green If you cannot hit the green, then the best play will be to lay up short of the dams. The green is rather long, yet narrow, and putting on the green has a large break from left to right.
Hole 11
Hole Name
From The Tee This will be the most difficult tee shot that you will face at the Wanderers. Many a Lexington PGA contender has had his hopes of winning dashed on this hole.
From The Fairway Out of bounds on the right and a dense bank of trees on the left protect this fairway. In order to hit the green with your second shot, your tee shot must be on the right half of the fairway as a tall tree will interfere with your approach.
On The Green The green is bunkered on the left and right sides, with water down the right side of the hole. Look out for our two beautiful resident swans and their cygnets.
Hole 12
Hole Name
From The Tee A good shot to this green needs to start at the right half of the green as the green is well protected by water and a bunker on the left.
From The Fairway Should you miss the green left, your ball will run down the slope and end up behind the trees lining the 11th fairway. Anywhere right on this hole will always setup a good scoring opportunity.
On The Green
Hole 13
Hole Name
From The Tee The highest stroking par 5 on the course, you will want to start your tee shot left as the fairway doglegs to the right. Beware that you do not hit your tee shot too long on the left-hand side as you will certainly run out of fairway.
From The Fairway Your second shot needs to be very accurate as the fairway is protected by bunkers up the left side and, should your ball find one of these bunkers, you will be faced with a very daunting third shot to the green.
On The Green The green is very narrow as you approach it and your ball will always run away to the right. Out of bounds hugs the right-hand side of the hole and the flowerbeds behind the green come into play very easily.
Hole 14
Hole Name
From The Tee Out of bounds down the right-hand side of the hole and tree lined down the left. Your tee shot must find the fairway.
From The Fairway This hole can play very long and your second to the green will be played at some very interesting bunkers.
On The Green Always keep your second shot right as the slope right of the green will aid you in bringing your ball to the pin. Treat this hole with respect and you may be rewarded with a good score.
Hole 15
Hole Name
From The Tee A down hill par 3 well protected on the left by bunkers. Remember when playing downhill that you will need to take less club. Should you hit your ball long and left you will be faced with a severe uphill chip shot.
From The Fairway
On The Green With the pin placed at the back of the green, it is advisable to play your tee shot to the middle of the green and try for a two-putt.
Hole 16
Hole Name
From The Tee Arguably the toughest hole on the golf course. The hole plays uphill from tee to green with the fairway sloping from right to left. Rather miss the fairway on the right as missing left will find you in the trees with a very difficult shot to the green.
From The Fairway Your approach uphill to the green needs to be well calculated as an errant shot left will leave you with no shot at the green.
On The Green Remember that, because you are playing uphill, you will need to take at least one extra club. Avoid the bunker on the left and you should have no problem finishing the hole well. Putting down the hill the ball needs to start well to the left as it will break severely to the hole.
Hole 17
Hole Name
From The Tee The Wanderers signature hole. This little monster has brought many players to their knees. You will have to treat this hole with the utmost respect. In order to score on this hole, your club selection will have to be perfect.
From The Fairway Any shot that does not find the green will result in a very difficult up and down. A new dam to the right of the green adds to the difficulty.
On The Green If the pin is cut on the left-hand side then the perfect starting line will be at the bunker in front of the green. The slope of the green will feed the ball towards the pin and set up a birdie opportunity.
Hole 18
Hole Name
From The Tee The final hole of the round and by this time you may be feeling a little tired. The fairway is wide and your tee shot should find the fairway.
From The Fairway You will encounter other difficulties when you approach your second shot which is invariably played from an uphill lie. This will tend to pull the ball left towards a well placed bunker.
On The Green Should the pin be cut on the right-hand side, then avoiding the bunkers on the right is critical. The green slopes from back to front and a putt down the hill will be very fast with a lot of break. Rather be short of the pin as this will give you the best opportunity to score well on the hole.
