Hole 1
Hole Name Pond
From The Tee An excellent and attractive starting hole. A mid iron to a dual bunkered par 3 green with water short right.
From The Fairway
On The Green Middle of the green is always a safe shot. Many will be happy to escape with a par.
Hole 2
Hole Name Holly
From The Tee
From The Fairway
On The Green Big hitters may be tempted to drive the green on this uphill, risk reward par 4 but percentage play is a mid-iron from the tee then a short iron to the green. Birdies are common for those taking the green on from the tee.
Hole 3
Hole Name Castle
From The Tee The first of Whitchurch’s par 5 holes. An inviting driving hole to a right to left sloping fairway.
From The Fairway A drive to the right hand ridge in the fairway gives a chance to hit the green in two.
On The Green To get home in two one must clear the cross bunkers some 75 yards short of the green.
Hole 4
Hole Name Wenalt
From The Tee
From The Fairway
On The Green A short par 4 with a narrow tee shot. Drive to the brow of the hill and stay short of the fairway bunkers to leave a wedge to a small and well-protected green.
Hole 5
Hole Name Fletchers
From The Tee The hardest hole on the course and played into the prevailing wind. A long drive is required to the corner of the slight right to left dogleg.
From The Fairway
On The Green Keep to the right hand side of the fairway to leave a long iron or fairway wood to a sloping and elevated green.
Hole 6
Hole Name Long Acre
From The Tee
From The Fairway
On The Green A long and straight par 4. An elevated tee shot requires a driver which will leave a long iron into a green protected by five strategically placed bunkers. Par here is an excellent score.
Hole 7
Hole Name Corner
From The Tee An uphill par 3 hole. Take one extra club as the bunkers short will catch any ball coming up shy leaving a difficult up and down. Try not to over club as out of bounds awaits any overstruck tee shots.
From The Fairway
On The Green
Hole 8
Hole Name Banks
From The Tee A demanding tee shot into the wind awaits those playing the 8th hole as the fairway slopes severely from left to right.
From The Fairway The second shot requires a lay-up short of the fairway bunkers 70 yards short right of the green.
On The Green This will leave a subtle pitch into the green which is below the level of the fairway.
Hole 9
Hole Name Pentwyn
From The Tee A driveable and downhill par 4. The 9th hole is risk reward at its best.
From The Fairway Drive your ball left and trees await, drive it right and the ball finds a collection of bunkers.
On The Green Find the approach to the green and a makeable birdie chance is on the cards.
Hole 10
Hole Name Tipperary
From The Tee The 10th hole offers a picturesque start to the back nine with views looking south towards the City of Cardiff. Eight bunkers line the hole and should be navigated at all costs.
From The Fairway A good drive will leave a mid-iron which should avoid the fairway bunkers just short of the green.
On The Green A short pitch onto a green sloping from front to back will need to be executed expertly in order to provide a birdie chance.
Hole 11
Hole Name Meadow
From The Tee The par 4 11th hole is the toughest on the back nine. It doglegs from left to right and requires a well struck drive in order to reach the green in two.
From The Fairway The uphill second shot plays longer than anticipated. A par here can feel like a shot picked up on the field.
On The Green
Hole 12
Hole Name Wood
From The Tee The 12th hole looks easy on the card but in reality many golfers can come unstuck.
From The Fairway The ideal play is to go for accuracy and lay up on the right hand side of the narrow and tree lined fairway which will leave around 100 yards into the green.
On The Green Playing uphill the golfer needs to “club up” to avoid the bunkers guarding the front left and right of the green. Right handside of the green is the safest play.
Hole 13
Hole Name Saucer
From The Tee The shortest par 3 on the course and stroke index 18. Played downhill towards the Clubhouse the hole plays shorter than the yardage dictates.
From The Fairway
On The Green Accuracy is everything, bunkers guard the front and a large slope gathers stray shots beyond the green. Judge the distance correctly and this hole can yield a number of twos.
Hole 14
Hole Name Downs
From The Tee
From The Fairway A testing par 4 which requires a drive from an elevated position to the left hand side of the fairway which slopes left to right.
On The Green This will open up the green leaving a mid-iron. The green is one of the largest on the course, find the right section or a challenging two putt should be expected.
Hole 15
Hole Name Patch
From The Tee The longest par 3 on the course where you must carry the ball all the way onto the sloping green.
From The Fairway Five bunkers are strategically positioned to gather any mishit shots. A sand save from any of these bunkers should be applauded.
On The Green
Hole 16
Hole Name Hawthorn
From The Tee Three holes from home the 16th is a short par 4 which requires a slight left to right tee shot.
From The Fairway
On The Green This will leave a mid to short iron to a small and back to front sloping green. Any balls ending up above the hole will leave delicate shots down the green, especially in the summer months.
Hole 17
Hole Name Firs
From The Tee An excellent driving hole. If choosing a driver it is imperative to find the fairway as it narrows in the landing area.
From The Fairway The conservative shot is to take a shorter club and find the right hand side of the fairway. The narrow green slopes away from the golfer and an accurate approach is needed to gain your birdie chance.
On The Green
Hole 18
Hole Name Home
From The Tee
From The Fairway Probably one of the toughest finishing holes in Wales! A solidly struck tee shot down the left is vital to avoid the pond on the right hand side of the fairway.
On The Green Even after a long tee shot a wood or long iron is still needed to a heavily sloping green with bunkers left and right. Many cards have been spoilt here.
