Hole 1
Hole Name
From The Tee A challenging opening hole usually into the prevailing wind. It requires a good drive into a reasonably wide landing area, but if you want to reach the green in two the fairway bunkers need to be avoided. The fairway narrows for the second shot with bunkers left and right and trees ready to catch a wayward shot. A par on this 1st hole is well earned.

Hole 2
Hole Name
From The Tee From a tee out on the Common, surrounded by gorse, heather and fescue, the choice is to hit over the right-hand bunker, or take the more cautious line into the left-hand side of the green. The ditch and fence 20 yards short of the green will catch a mis-hit shot

From The Tee The carry over the heather is less fearsome than it appears from the tee, the favoured line being left-centre, to avoid possibly being blocked out by the copse of trees on the right. For the second shot, the player must decide whether to risk going for the green or to lay up short of the two fairway bunkers about 70 yards short of it. Hole 4
Hole Name
From The Tee
From The Fairway A slight dogleg to the left requires an accurate rather than a long tee shot over a diagonal ditch to avoid the well-placed fairway bunker on the right. You then hit into a welcoming green which has bunkers front and right as well as a ditch on the left which can easily suck in a mis-hit shot.

Hole 5
Hole Name
From The Tee
From The Fairway You drive down a narrow tunnel of trees into a wide area of fairway, but for longer hitters, two strategically placed fairway bunkers come into play. Thereafter the fairway narrows with copses of trees either side, necessitating an accurate second shot into the face of a slick, sloping green with bunkers right and left. Experienced players always try to leave themselves an uphill putt. Locals say

Hole 6
Hole Name
From The Tee
From The Fairway Best to take a direct line up the middle from the tee, to avoid the large fairway bunker on the left and the trees on the right. Your second then needs to clear an intimidating cross fairway ditch and stay away from another ditch down the left, to reach a distant green which is fringed with bunkers and surrounded by trees.

Hole 7
Hole Name
From The Tee Our signature hole, while not a long par 3, requires an accurate shot into a sloping green over a lily-padded pond that seems to present more difficulties than it logically should. Club selection is critical: the prevailing wind can often catch a mis-hit shot and carry it out of bounds into the “Colonel’s garden” on the right. In Summer, a putt down the slope is a challenge to even the best golfer

Hole 8
Hole Name
From The Tee
From The Fairway The drive back over the pond should present no difficulty, but must be steered either short or to the right of the large fairway bunker on the left. A shorter drive will require two more shots to the green, while a longer one will be rewarded by the chance of reaching the distant green, which is bunkered on both sides. Probably our toughest par 4 due to its length, and worthy of its status as SI 1

Hole 9
Hole Name
From The Tee
From The Fairway This hole has recently been remodelled, with new fairway bunkers tightening the landing area considerably which you need to thread your way through if you wish to get your par. Whilst your second shot is likely to be relatively short, the green is surrounded by no fewer than five threatening bunkers. So not a long par 4, but by no means an easy one either. Refreshment awaits you at our Halfway Hou

Hole 10
Hole Name
From The Tee This hole favours a long, straight drive, which then allows a clear view of a green that lies down a slight slope - so don’t overclub or your second shot will end up in severe trouble through the back of the green. Additionally, the fairway is lined with trees and bunkers so that it is a challenge if you stray even slightly off line.

Hole 11
Hole Name
From The Tee It is often said that the shortest par 3’s are some of the best, and our 11th hole demonstrates this perfectly. Despite there being no bunkers, many players get caught out by it. The tee shot is from the Common over an oak tree, a fence and a ditch to an elevated, sloping green. We think you will enjoy this hole.

From The Tee
From The Fairway Recently lengthened with the addition of a new tee, increasing the challenge of an already tough hole. The copse of trees on the left leads many a golfer to push their tee shot out to the right and then be stymied by another copse on that side of the fairway. In May the rhododendrons behind the green are magnificent - but don’t be distracted by these when playing your second shot or you are sure t

Hole 13
Hole Name
From The Tee A slight dogleg to the left with trees on both sides means you need to be accurate with your drive, but the fact that it is slightly downhill also gives you the feeling that you can “open your shoulders” a little here. Your second shot, however, needs to be very precise if it is to thread its way onto the green through a narrow approach between two daunting greenside bunkers.

Hole 14

From The Tee
From The Fairway If you mastered the dogleg to the left on the last hole, you are now challenged with a more severe dogleg to the right. The trees planted 25 years ago on the right-hand side of the fairway mean your drive must be accurate, otherwise you are likely to be blocked out or even having to play out sideways. At the same time, be careful not to run out of fairway on the left. Very long hitters sometimes t

Hole 15
Hole Name
From The Tee The longest hole on the course still offers the truly big hitters the chance to pound their ball onto the green in two and seek eagle. Recent work has moved the fairway more to the left, away from the out of bounds fence beyond which lies the road back to Strensall on the right. But the narrowed fairway means that most mere mortals have to play with great care to avoid trouble and leave a reasonab

Hole 16
Hole Name
From The Tee
From The Fairway A relatively new tee has resulted in a considerably longer hole with a more pronounced dogleg than before. The ditch on the right catches many a pushed tee shot. The narrow landing area due to trees on both sides and a much-frequented fairway bunker on the left means you have to drive well to be rewarded with a straight shot into a slightly raised green, where more bunkering and a pond at the back

Hole 17
Hole Name
From The Tee Our longest par 3 has been transformed in recent years, with new bunkering giving a most attractive view from the tee. Careful club selection and confident shotmaking are needed to avoid any problems with these bunkers, which guard the front and sides of a long, narrow, sloping green.

From The Tee
From The Fairway We finish with a long par 4, usually played into the wind, with a slight dogleg to the right. The cross bunkers which cover half the right side of the fairway challenge the longer hitters, but most take the safer line to the left of them whilst still needing to be careful not to run out of room with trees all the way down the left hand side of the fairway. The slope up to the well-bunkered green c
